Countering Philanthropic Fragility with Philanthropic Collaboration — Inside Philanthropy

For Inside Philanthropy, Aubin director Catherine Gund wrote about the radical community exchange that trees practice and their essential lesson for everyone looking to bring about justice.

"To challenge the status quo of wealth and whiteness, we have to cultivate an organic structure like the Pando Forest, in which wealth is redefined as the result of collaboration among philanthropists and the visionary people organizing our cities’ most sustainable and transformative work. This can be our devotional act for our communities: reimagining justice starting at our shared roots."

Philanthropy is too concerned with maintaining its own control, which closes it off to new ideas and powerful forms of collaboration. In this guest post, the chair of the Gund Foundation and founder of Aubin Pictures offers a path forward.

More on Dispatches from Cleveland:
Directed by Catherine Gund. DISPATCHES FROM CLEVELAND is a feature-length documentary in five parts that closely examines the city of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the most racially divided cities in America, in the wake of the police murder of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. The film follows ordinary people – long shaken by police misconduct, social discrimination, and poverty – whose love for their home pushes them to work together to bring about real change.

PECULIAR SILENCE Sizzle

We're in production on short documentary film: PECULIAR SILENCE 🎥

On January 8th, 2020, playwright, actress, and “artivist” Liza Jessie Peterson, traveled to the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola, to perform her acclaimed one-woman show, The Peculiar Patriot. Seven hundred men packed Angola’s 600-seat chapel. The play, written by Liza and inspired by her decades-long work with incarcerated people, struck a chord. The Peculiar Patriot examines the injustices of America’s prison system and at times gives a scathing indictment of those who profit from mass incarceration. This material fired up the men of Angola and caused the staff to become noticeably uncomfortable. The tension in the room was palpable. Halfway through the performance, the Angola corrections officers shut down the play. Liza and her camera crew were abruptly ushered out of the building, along with the audience who erupted in verbal protest at the performance's screeching halt. The footage of Liza’s performance was destroyed by the Angola administration.

PECULIAR SILENCE examines what led to the shutdown of the performance at Angola, the material that confronted a system, and how the impact of Liza’s visit rippled through Angola long after the record of her visit was erased.

Art and justice are inextricably linked. Aubin's #AggieFilm tells the story of this connection and the power it generates.

The news about Liz Andrews as the New Executive Director of Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in Atlanta, the only U.S. museum dedicated to art created by Black women, is something we're very much cheering at Aubin.

“[Liz's] social justice scholarship, embrace of innovative technologies and appreciation for interdisciplinary collaborations make her the right leader at the right time for the future of the only museum in the country that is dedicated to work created by Black women.” — Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell

Cheers to ED Liz Andrews, we can't wait to see what you do at your new post.

Happy Friday from team Aubin 💫

We talk a lot about balance at Aubin. We talk about how we can better support each other and ourselves by centering warmth, play, and pause in our work days.

Simply, we can't do our work unless we take care of each other and ourselves and part of this care is stepping away, puzzling, moving without structure, switching into a different channel to hear what's playing outside the theater of our calendars.

Mentorship is a core pillar of the Aubin Pictures mission. Our goal is to disrupt and evolve the pipeline for filmmaker talent and to bring more women and non-binary people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community into the field with meaningful support in the form of mentorships, paid internships, and networking and production opportunities. In our 25th anniversary year, we’re doubling down on our commitment to train the next generation of creative people through our internship program.

That’s why this month we’re featuring Beck Roman’s internship capstone project. Aubin interns complete creative projects to engage Aubin’s filmography and practice a fundamental artistic endeavor: dialogue with fellow creators in your orbit. For his project, Beck designed a poster to synthesize Aubin’s 25 years of filmmaking.

Here's Beck's message about his capstone:

"The Aubin Pictures 25th Anniversary poster was designed as a tribute to the development of Aubin and its community over the years. People, films, and imagery that represent our community and values were included in various ways. From the Aubin Pictures color palette to the small details layered in the background, everything has been carefully chosen to represent beliefs and contributions of our Aubin family. While this artistic project was crafted to specifically celebrate the upcoming anniversary in 2021, it is also meant to document and reflect on Aubin’s history in a visual manner that will last for years to come. After many drafts and edited versions of this poster, I’m beyond excited to share the finished product with everyone!"

The shooting death of Laquan McDonald is the ultimate disgrace for me... painful and moving to see the video. And remember : police lie, lie, lie. and DA's do the same thing. Harry Connick Sr., new orleans DA for 35 years??? vile and father of the 'crooner' harry connick Jr. This connection was pointed out by artists who recently viewed "The courage of her Convictions." anyway: scream out about the crap.
