Classical Music Livestreams Worth Paying For

“Will the public pay for music online? The answer is just beginning to emerge. The artists and organizations who can draw sizable numbers of paying customers may be those who already had globally prominent brands before the pandemic. The Metropolitan Opera, for example, has recently begun a series of livestreamed recitals featuring star singers, sophisticated camerawork and vibrant audio. The tenor Jonas Kaufmann’s recital last month, tickets for which cost $20, was viewed by 44,000 people — not a bad gross.”

Performances by Renée Fleming, Daniil Trifonov and Sandbox Percussion are among those that have asked viewers to purchase tickets.

It is with deep sadness we have just learned of the passing of Amore Opera’s Nathan Hull. He was truly a wonderful man with a passion for singers and opera. He leaves a void in the NYC opera scene and some very big shoes to fill. He will be missed.

Mostly Mozart Festival on WQXR | Mostly Mozart on WQXR | WQXR

“This year, ‘Mostly Mozart Festival on WQXR’ will reimagine Lincoln Center’s iconic summer series — canceled for the first time since its founding in 1966 due to COVID-19 — as a weeklong multimedia festival...The centerpiece of the festival is a radio documentary about the opera Blue (Aug 14, 8pm ET), which places the timely issues of race and police brutality at the forefront of modern opera and invites audiences to the emotional epicenter of their impact. The documentary will pair exclusive musical highlights from the opera’s debut at the 2019 Glimmerglass Festival, enriched by commentary from its creators, composer and Tony Award–winner Jeanine Tesori and librettist/ director Tazewell Thompson. Musicologist Naomi André will offer context and insight into Blue’s creation and enduring resonance. Their voices will be interwoven and richly scored with music from the opera, bringing the story to life in an immersive narrative audio experience.”

Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival moves onto the airwaves for its 2020 season.

65 Million Tourists, Gone From N.Y.C.

“Before the pandemic, in 2018, the city welcomed a record 65 million tourists from around the world. Those visitors spent $44 billion — money that was crucial to keeping hotels, restaurants, bars, stores, theaters and museums afloat.”

The city is mired in an economic crisis, and the return of visitors looks distant. That's devastating news for these three tourist destinations.

Opera Foundation Removes Trustee for Racially Charged Comments

“On Saturday, Julia Bullock, a Black soprano, shared a Washington Post story on her page that quoted protesters in Portland, Ore., who said they had been detained by federal officers in unmarked vans. In response, Mr. Tucker commented, ‘Good. Get rid of these thugs and I don’t care where you send them. They are a Pox on our society.’ In another comment, he wrote, ‘About time someone tough will try to crush the mob before they destroy and kill more innocent people. Bravo to Trump to send in Federal troops.’...The Black Opera Alliance, an organization founded last month that aims to expose racial inequity in opera, wrote an open letter to the foundation’s board on Sunday calling for Mr. Tucker’s removal. ‘We are deeply disturbed,’ Derrell Acon, the founder of the group and the director of engagement and equity at Long Beach Opera in California, wrote in the letter, to which other members of the group also contributed. ‘It is impossible for someone who holds these views to contribute productively to any organization that seeks to cultivate a culture of respect, equity and justice.’”

The Richard Tucker Music Foundation, which gives prestigious awards to young singers, removed Richard Tucker’s son from its board.

Safer Singing During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic: What We Know and What We Don't

“Singing with a more ‘resonant’ voice and less airflow, an accomplishment associated with trained singers of many genres who learn to manage breathing efficiency to sing long phrases, could in theory be less likely to transmit disease.”

While the novel coronavirus outbreak has profoundly altered health care systems across the globe, it has also affected similar change and devastation on the social, educational and cultural communities upon which many rely, including communities of choral singers, solo performers, conductors, voice....

A Met Opera Star Was Born, ‘Then Everything Stopped’

“‘To go from maybe the highest point in my career so far to literally nothing has been tragic, to say the least,’ she said. ‘Initially I was in disbelief and shock. Since then I’ve been going through phases of fighting back, despair and acceptance.’ For classical music, which for all its ritzy connotations has always been economically fragile, the impact of the pandemic has been devastating — for large companies as well as for freelance artists like Ms. Bridges.“

The mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges reckons with the challenges of the pandemic along with other freelance musicians, like the pianist Conor Hanick.
