'Carol' cinematographer Ed Lachman dishes Oscar nomination and changing technology (Podcast)

“As a cinematographer, we’re all telling our stories through the camera, and we create the emotions with the visual language to engage the audience to our stories. So I was greatly honored to think that our film, which was a relatively lower budget to the other films being chosen, was chosen for its photographic acumen.” --Ed Lachman on his Oscar nomination for Carol, shot on Super16mm film.

Check out the podcast below which features our director Ed Lachman discussing how camera technology directly relates to the ability to represent and capture the emotions of the characters involved through psychologically visual storytelling.

Ed Lachman 's first credit as a cinematographer was on the 1974 film "The Lords of Flatbush," which introduced both Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler. More than four deca..

Contenders: Cinematography Oscar Nominees

Ed Lachman is featured in Variety Magazine's CONTENDERS: Cinematography Oscar Nominees. From the write-up: "For his fourth collaboration with director Todd Haynes (including the outstanding HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce”), Ed Lachman shot on Super 16 mm film because of the format’s kinship with the picture’s ’50s period milieu. “I was trying to reference early color film,” Lachman told Variety back in November."

From analog fans to digital practitioners, the Oscar nominated d.p.’s choose approaches that match themes.

Music of Regret - Cutdown

Laurie Simmons on Music of Regret, the film she directed with double wide media starring Meryl Streep and shot by Ed Lachman: "I always imagined them dancing. I always imagined them moving, but I make still photographs. I think about my work very cinematically, so a chance to really take all the characters that I’ve used, all the images that I’ve used, and meet them through time-based work was really exciting. When I made my film in 2005, we actually built objects that the Alvin Ailey dancers could wear. They were a little bit unwieldy, but the objects were a house and a gun and a cake, and we had a ballet dancer and a tap dancer and a tango dancer." (From New York Magazine)

Laurie's most recent short film (made in partnership with New York Magazine's The Cut), Dance of the Seven Handbags, can be seen here: http://nymag.com/thecut/2016/02/short-film-laurie-simmons-accessories-c-v-r.html#video
