‘patacritical Interrogation Techniques is a real world implementation of the principles of 19th century French playwright Alfred Jarry’s science of ‘pataphysics, or “the science of imaginary solutions.” Largely known as the study of that which exists beyond metaphysics, ‘pataphysics draws on the illogical or the absurd, often acting as a parody of modern science expressed via the nonsensical or useless. ‘pataphyics promotes the exception to the rule, arguing against that which is proven, and describing that which does not exist. Extremely influential to modernist literary and artistic thought, ‘pataphyics flourished after Jarry’s death with the opening of the College de ‘Pataphysique in 1948, a school whose early members included Eugene Ionescu, Joan Miró and Marcel Duchamp. After going underground for 25 years, the school resumed its public role in 2000 and was echoed with the opening of several branches of pataphysical institutes across the globe. Its impact can be seen in Absurdism, Dadaism, futurism, surrealism and situationalism.
