‘patacritical Interrogation Techniques is a real world implementation of the principles of 19th century French playwright Alfred Jarry’s science of ‘pataphysics, or “the science of imaginary solutions.” Largely known as the study of that which exists beyond metaphysics, ‘pataphysics draws on the illogical or the absurd, often acting as a parody of modern science expressed via the nonsensical or useless. ‘pataphyics promotes the exception to the rule, arguing against that which is proven, and describing that which does not exist. Extremely influential to modernist literary and artistic thought, ‘pataphyics flourished after Jarry’s death with the opening of the College de ‘Pataphysique in 1948, a school whose early members included Eugene Ionescu, Joan Miró and Marcel Duchamp. After going underground for 25 years, the school resumed its public role in 2000 and was echoed with the opening of several branches of pataphysical institutes across the globe. Its impact can be seen in Absurdism, Dadaism, futurism, surrealism and situationalism.

Scott Navicky is the author of 3 Essays on Imagereality and Humboldt: Or, The Power of Positive Thinking. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Auckland in art history with a focus on photography theory. He lives in Columbus, Ohio.
In Satires, the Roman poet Horace poses the question: “What forbids us to tell the truth, laughing?” Why not approach teaching art history the same way? What forbids us from comparing Egyptian Triad sculptures to the music videos of Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe? Or discussing how the Hammurabi Law Code is one inch taller than Kristaps Porzingus, and thus could, theoretically, play center for the New York Knicks?
If You Give Me a Lily, I’ll Make it a Field is an attempt to teach the history of western art from the Paleolithic to the Quattrocento, laughing. The book touches upon topics as diverse as the vaginaphobia of the Roman Empire, the plan to move Stonehenge to Cleveland, the intoxicating splendor of ancient Egypt, and the sensible drunkenness of ancient Greece.

Archives help memories emerge from the dust of our lives, read this fascinating book by Geof Huth and learn more about the process and beauty that exists in an archive.

The Anarchivist: History, Memory, and Archives
by Geof Huth

This volume assembles essays on the practice of archives by the archivist and experimental poet Geof Huth, along with his color photographs of ancient records on parchment and distressed paper. Huth reflects on the interplay between history, archives, and memory—on how we imagine facts and truth into being. In the end, the book is concerned with how we produce knowledge via the stories told through those records we have determined to keep.

In this inventive myth that straddles the binary of traditional narrative and experimental fiction, poet Elena Theeland overcomes the trauma of her past to raise a family who would overthrow the dictatorship in Pacifica.
