BUNJI GARLIN AND FAYANN ON T&T’S FANTASTIK 5
…The Last Badjohn of Calypso also makes the list

Soca power couple - Bunji “ViKing” Garlin and his wife Fayann “ViQueen” Lyons continue to break barriers for entertainers in their home island of Trinidad and Tobago. Calypso Connect conducted a survey among Calypso/Soca music lovers to determine the top five artistes coming out of Trinidad and Tobago for 2013.

The Magnificent 5 list is as follows:

•Austin “Superblue” Lyons – Fantastik Friday (Joint International Soca Monarch) A true come back story made for the movies. Super returned, triumphed and taught all soca students a vital lesson – “never say never.” He undoubtedly stamped his authority not just as the High Priest of Soca but also as the Undisputed King of Soca.

•Ian “Bunji Garlin” Alvarez – Differentology (Song of the season) The four-time Soca Monarch stirred controversy in Soca land by withdrawing from the International Soca Monarch Semi Final round. Many have labeled his track Soca of the Year and it has been breaking barriers and gaining steady growth on the International music circuit. A tune to keep both eyes on.

•Kurt Allen “The Last Badjohn of Calypso” – Political Sin Phony (People’s Calypso Monarch 2013) His masterpiece of a Calypso titled “Political Sin Phony” must be classified and specially categorized as Calypso of the Year. However, to be completely fair, the “Badjohn” has been in a Calypso class all by himself for the past three years. He is one of the most consistent Calypsonian, master lyricist/composer. Political Sin Phony will forever be termed a true classic in Calypso.

•Dexter “Blaxx” Stewart – Leggo (People’s Groovy Soca Monarch 2013) Blaxx unleashed what was considered by many to be the ultimate Party track for 2013. While a major soca title seems to keep slipping from his grasp he continues to knock on the door. He is of the most consistent and party favourite artiste of this era. As lead singer of the legendary Roy Cape All Stars music band, Blaxx is certainly expected to keep pumping his brand of party hits.

•Fayann Lyons Alverez – We Doing It. Fayann is the only female artiste that appears in the Calypso Connect Fantastik 5 performers of 2013. The only woman to win the International Soca Monarch title (Groovy and Power) and the only woman with three Road March Titles to her credit, Fayann is undoubtedly the undisputed Soca Queen of the World. She continues to dominate the airwaves and keeps her live party audiences happily jumping, waving and mashing up the fetes.

KING DICE RULES SUPREME

King Dice is the youngest and ONLY Dominican Calypsonian to win five national crowns and five consecutive road march titles.

Denison Joseph well known as ‘King Dice’ has carried the name of his community Boetica everywhere he performs. He is the son of Roy Joseph and Phyllis Daniel of Boetica.

The king’s singing career started in 1998 when he took part in the junior calypso monarch while still a student at SMA, he then took his skill further in 2002 as a competitor at the National Calypso King competition where he placed third with the song “Tarzan.” Still not deterred by his loss, Denison came back to compete with the song that made him king for the first time “Animal Farm” in 2004.

As a former Junior Calypso Monarch, Dennison “King Dice” Joseph is the youngest and only calypsonian to win five national crowns and five consecutive road march titles in Dominica calypso history. In his first win in 2004, he sang the songs “Peace Is My Business", dedicated to world leaders, and the second round crowd pleaser "Animal Farm," which compared politicians to various farm animals.

In 2005 he retained the crown with his songs "Help My Brother For Me” and the political satire “Puppet Master." On February 25 2006, King Dice made history by becoming the third but youngest calypsonian in 30 years to win three calypso crowns in three consecutive years, accomplishing what many veteran calypsonians have yet been able to do. "These Are The Days" and "I Eh Fraid Of Them" were the two songs he performed that night.

Although Dice was definitely the crowd favorite on the night of February 17 2007, where he performed "Lights" and "Follow Your Leader." He placed 4th out of nine other calypsonians.

Not breaking from the recipe that secured his prior wins, Dice with the help of songwriter Pat Aaron came back a year later in 2008 to capture the crown with "Roll The Dice And See" and "On My Own." By then, he had won five consecutive rouad marches with the songs "Tarzan"-2003, "Animal Farm-2004, "Puppet Master"-2005, "I Eh Fraid"-2006 and "Lights"-2007.

King Dice has received several awards for his accomplishments in the calypso arena including A Young Achievers Award in 2004 from the Dominican government for his contribution to culture.

In July 2006, he along with the other two calypsonians who have won 3 consecutive crowns he received his blue three-peat jacket from the University of the West Indies in Dominica and Pawol Inc. He also received in 2006 a Youth Ambassador Award from the National Youth Council of Dominica in recognition of his contribution to calypso art form and for his 3-peat achievement.

However, after a hiatus from competitions for a number of years, the King returned from his self imposed sabbatical and was once again crowned Calypso Monarch 2013. Check Out King Dice!

CALYPSO FINDS SAFE HAVEN IN DOMINICA
Story By: Calypso Connect

Trinidad and Tobago is the undisputed mother of Calypso music but if Calypso were to manifest in physical form, would Calypso chose Trinidad as home?

This question is raised, and must be seriuosly considered, in the context that the offspring of Calypso - Soca, has driven the Calypso art form and its exponents to the brink of irrelevance in a society that was once shaped by Calypso, a society that once waved the Calypso banner with joy and pride.

Where then would Calypso reside? Calypso Connect would not be surprised if Calypso were to find comfort in establishing a new home in Dominica.

Dominica’s rich history in Calypso can be traced back to 1958 with the crowning of their first Calypso Monarch “The Oberver” singing “The Eleven Sisters” in the country's one song competition.

From then to now Calypso has remained the number one choice for the Dominican music lover, with even the country's indigenous creation “Bouyon” music playing second fiddle.

Calypso shows are sold out year round and the National Calypso Monarch competiton remains the number one attended show. On the other hand, the Soca genre has not been able to thrive as even the Soca Monarch Competition had to be cancelled due to lack of attendance and corporate support.

And as if that is not enough, the Dominican Calypsonains Association also boast of owning their very own headquarters/building aptly named Calypso House in Bath Estate.

Then, if Dominica and Calypso are progressing at such a rate, why is it the biggest secret? Why are we not fully aware?

One main factor presented is that both Dominica and Trinidad and Tobago carnivals fall on the same date. Their Calypso Monarch competition is on Carnival Saturday and Trinidad’s on Carnival Sunday.

Therefore, the world pays more attention to what’s taking place with Carnival in Trinidad while Dominica is left to cater for mainly nationals and returning nationals.

Calypso Connect will however be paying close attention to what happens with the artform in Dominica as well as anywhere else in the world that Calypso finds a space.

Next week we will take a look at how the season is shaping up for Calypso in Dominica and we will also feature the top Dominican Calypsonians as part of our drive to promote the artform globally.
