Wright State University students gathered in mourning Wednesday for their classmate Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian immigrant and first-year honors student who died Monday morning after stepping into traffic on Interstate 70 in Clark County and being struck by a semi truck, according to investigators.

Bel wrote about the device on Instagram on July 30. "I didn't come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone. Yet now I'm walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience," he wrote.

Bel was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in late July, after the Supreme Court allowed the Department of Homeland Security to end TPS for Haitians. He arrived in Springfield in 2024 through the CBP One program and had a pending asylum case.
