Are annual performance reviews still relevant?
I’ve been wondering whether the traditional performance review has outlived its purpose.
In many organizations, reviews feel more like a checkbox than a meaningful evaluation. They’re often viewed as being tied to raises, yet many employees receive similar salary increases regardless of their actual performance.
If that’s the case, are we really recognizing high performers, or are we just completing another annual HR process?
Would organizations be better served by providing continuous feedback, coaching, and recognizing measurable results throughout the year instead of relying on a once-a-year conversation?
I’m curious. Do performance reviews motivate you to improve, or do they feel like an outdated system that no longer reflects how people contribute?
