Bai that na nothing, at least you pickney them making high space, I wish I could say the same for me own them. Me two big one them, me wife does have to dash cold water on them most morning to get them out of bed to go to school. Me na no wa really them go do with them life.
Sharma

My point is, you didn’t do so well in school but you still were able to do something! Look you have your own house, you have you own business, you provide a service all the people in this village, bai if not been for this little shop you have here, we would have had to catch passage into town to get little goods.

Me and my family overseas does gaff steady and they always asking when I going to migrate to the states, how it have better opportunities for the children. Steady them does talk that thing till one day one of them ask me what I want my children to grow up to do, plant rice and cut cane! Bai, me tell you me na hold back, I tell them, if no body na plant rice where would they get the rice in their plate from, if no body cut cane, where them would get them sugar fah pun in them tea!

Sharma, you know no matter how hard things get, I does think about me papa, he sweat and blood go into building this house, cane cutta money make this house and provided for he 13 pickney. If he been can do all that, what make me cant do am too and me only get 6 pickney!

(car horn blows, she pays the shopkeeper) I have to go, …, I mean the car is waiting for me, (turns to Sharma) It was nice seeing you again Sharma, you look, you look good. (Hurries out the shop, Sharma stared in amazement at her as she leaves)
Boyo
Sharma lock you mouth na bai, fly going in.
Sharma
What nonsense you talking!
Boyo
Hey, me na too bright, but me suspect the two of you was more then friends.
Sharma
You know your right and wrong, we were friends in secondary school, we were best friends, we walked to school together, we did homework together, we used to lime a lot. One morning I went by her home to collect her to go to school, and the gate was chained up, all the windows and doors were locked, I never saw or heard from her again.
Boyo
So you two were… more then friends?
Sharma
Well no, I never worked up the courage to tell her how I did ever felt about her. I though about her a lot after she left, as time passed I eventually forgot about her till just now!
Boyo
She did ever felt the same way about you too?
Sharma
I don’t know its really hard to say, but I tell you this much, when ever I was sick or needed something, she was always there for me! My mother did like her a lot. She mother passed away when she was young, my mother used to treat her like her own daughter. Taught her how to cook roti and curry too. Bai, pass me a cold one deh!
Boyo
A cold what, u asking me for a beer?
Sharma
NO I need something stronger, give me a quart!
Boyo
Is since when u drink?
Sharma
Just give me the dam drink na bai (Drinks it out fast and walks out the shop)

Kavita walks into the shop no one there to sell

Yes star gyal, like you like the lemonade you come back for more.
Kavita
Yes…I mean no…I mean, is Sharma around, I was hoping to meet him.
Boyo
Sharma, no he didn’t come as yet for today. Actually I don’t know if he will come today. He does come one one time to bun a lil gaff.
Kavita
Oh I had really wanted to meet him.
Boyo
You wanted to meet him? Wait, you don’t remember where he lives, he hasn’t moved out the house he living in he whole life.
Kavita
I can’t go there, I mean I don’t want to go there. I know he is married and have kids. I don’t want to cause problems for him and his family.
Boyo
What you mean you can’t go there? Cause problems? Aren’t you guys friends?
Kavita

Boyo

Yes sure, let me get you an exercise page. (hands her a sheet and a pen, she writes a few lines and folds the paper up and give it to him and walks out sad and slow)

(Later that day, Sharma comes to the shop)
Sharma

Boyo
Again, bai, you know me don’t understand what is going on here, you did deh good good till that Krassing gyal came into this shop.
Boyo
Bai stop talking schupidness and pass the thing and give me.
Shopkeeper
Hear what, that krassing gyal came this morning looking for you and left this here for you.
Sharma
Note? Is when she bring a letter here?
Boyo
She came here early this morning looking for you and couldnt find you. I tell she if she wanted to see you to go to you house, but she refused to. Instead she write this and left it for you.
Sharma
(Collects the letter and walks out to the front of the shop, takes a sip of the quart and sits to read) (note is heard as a voice over in Kavita’s voice)
Sharma, I came back to Guyana in hopes to find you, its been hard over the years. I been keeping a secret from you all these years. I tried so many times to contact you. I eventually came across your page; saw how happy you were with your family. I tried to stay away, but I couldn’t live with it anymore. I didn’t just disappear one night. You remember those magical moments we spent together on your birthday in the backdams under the sweety tree?! After a few weeks after I wasn’t feeling well, daddy took me to the doctor only to find out I did pregnant. He was very upset with me, told me I wasn’t married yet, how can I make a baby. He took me to town and had an abortion done and arranged for us to move overseas. He didn’t want me to have anything to do with you, said we had no future together. Daddy passed away a year now. I finally made up my mind to come tell you the truth. I am so sorry! It hurt me so much that I had to be separated from you. I prayed that one day we would be together again.
(Sharma breaks down in tears) I can’t bare to see you with your wife and kids knowing that should have been me with you! I never told you…but I love you; I always have and never stopped..

Scene 4
Omawattie
Boyo, you seen Sharma around, I ringing he phone and he not answering.
Shopkeeper
He was here a while a go and then he gone, he didn’t talk where he was going.
Omawattie
I don’t know what is going on with him, but since yesterday he come home he acting strange. He come in the house, did talk to nobody and gone straight to he bed. This morning, soon as he wake up he gone out the house. All right, if you see hem tell him I’m looking for him.
Shopkeeper
All right good. If me see him, I’ll tell him to call you...
