"Rest in Peace, Officer Katie Thyne.

U.S. Navy veteran and Newport News Police Officer Katie Thyne dedicated her life to serving others, both in the military and in law enforcement.

In January 2020, Katie was conducting a traffic stop when the driver suddenly fled, dragging her with the vehicle for several blocks. She suffered critical injuries in the incident. Despite the efforts of medical professionals to save her life, Katie tragically passed away surrounded by those who loved her.

Before beginning her law enforcement career, Katie proudly served her country in the United States Navy. She later continued that commitment to service by joining the Newport News Police Department, protecting and serving her community.

Her loss was especially heartbreaking because behind the uniform was also a devoted mother. Katie left behind her beloved 2-year-old daughter.

Officer Thyne’s life represented courage, duty, and service. From wearing the uniform of the U.S. Navy to wearing the badge of the Newport News Police Department, she devoted herself to something greater than herself.

Her service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Officer Katie Thyne.

"When Olivia’s e-bike was stolen on Mother’s Day, she lost far more than a way to get around. The bike was her transportation to oncology appointments while she was undergoing treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer.

Kansas City Police Officer JP Young responded that day and made Olivia a promise: he would keep looking for her bike.

More than a month passed, but Officer Young didn’t forget.

While on patrol with his partner, he noticed a man riding an e-bike that had recently been spray-painted. Looking closer, the bike’s original paint could still be seen underneath.

Young immediately thought of Olivia.

He sent her a photo, and she confirmed that it was her stolen bike. Officers made an arrest, and after weeks of waiting, Olivia was finally reunited with the transportation she depended on.

She later recalled Officer Young arriving with one of the biggest smiles she had ever seen.

But the kindness didn’t stop there.

A local volunteer group also stepped forward and assembled and repaired another bike for Olivia completely free of charge, giving her additional support during an already difficult chapter of her life.

Officer Young could have allowed the case to become just another report.

Instead, he remembered the promise he made and kept looking until he could deliver on it.

Sometimes service isn’t defined by one dramatic moment.

Sometimes it’s refusing to forget someone who is counting on you and keeping your word, no matter how much time has passed.

"Sometimes, the smallest act of kindness becomes a moment someone will never forget.

Shortly after midnight on his 25th birthday, Chris was feeling alone and simply wanted to hear someone wish him a happy birthday.

So he called 911, hoping the person who answered would offer those few meaningful words.

But Officers Israel Bracho and Franklin Ortiz decided to do something more.

Before heading to Chris’s home, the officers stopped to pick up a muffin and candles. When they arrived, they surprised him and sang “Happy Birthday” together, turning what began as a lonely night into a beautiful memory.

For Chris, it wasn’t about an expensive gift or a big celebration. It was about knowing that someone cared enough to show up.

The officers could have simply wished him a happy birthday over the phone, but instead, they chose compassion.

Their simple gesture is a reminder that policing can also be about human connection, empathy, and being there for someone who needs kindness.

Sometimes, making a difference doesn’t require a heroic rescue or a dramatic moment.

Sometimes, it’s a muffin, a few candles, and showing someone they aren’t alone.

A beautiful act of kindness from Officers Bracho and Ortiz that Chris will likely remember for years to come.

"PC Amy Glew has received a Chief Constable’s Commendation for her remarkable courage after stepping into danger during a serious house fire while off duty.

Despite not being on duty at the time, Amy immediately responded when she encountered the emergency. She helped ensure the occupants were safe, entered the burning property to rescue the family’s pet, and isolated the electricity supply while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Her quick thinking and willingness to act helped protect both the family and their pet during a frightening and dangerous situation.

Her Sergeant, Sam, praised Amy’s instinctive courage, saying what stood out most was that she never hesitated despite being off duty. He described her actions as a reflection of the officer she is: caring, courageous, and always prepared to go beyond what is expected to help others.

For Amy, however, stepping forward simply felt like the right thing to do.

Speaking about the recognition, she said she felt “incredibly humbled” and never expected to receive an award for actions that came naturally to her.

She also expressed pride in belonging to a profession dedicated to helping people during their most difficult moments, whether an officer is on duty or not.

PC Glew’s actions are a powerful reminder that courage doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.

Her bravery, compassion, and decisive response have now been recognised with a well-deserved Chief Constable’s Commendation.

"When Seconds Mattered, Officer Ryan Murrell Acted

Officer Ryan Murrell has been honored with an Oklahoma Legislative Citation for his extraordinary courage and lifesaving actions. The recognition was presented by Representative Tammy Townley on behalf of herself and Senator Jerry Alvord.

During a vehicle pursuit in September 2025, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol unit overturned and burst into flames.

Officer Murrell immediately rushed to help.

With the injured trooper trapped inside the burning vehicle, Murrell forced open the door, deflated the airbag system, and helped the severely injured and disoriented trooper escape to safety.

There was no time to hesitate. His quick thinking, courage, and decisive response directly helped save the trooper’s life.

Officer Murrell’s actions demonstrate what it means to step forward when another person’s life depends on it.

His bravery and commitment to protecting others have now earned him a well-deserved Oklahoma Legislative Citation.

Congratulations to Officer Ryan Murrell, and thank you for your courage, service, and willingness to act when every second mattered.

"A beautiful moment of community policing was captured early this morning during a LIVE segment with Jason Drew and Gulf Coast News Now for Flavors of 5th on Naples’ iconic 5th Avenue South.

Several Naples Police Department community policing officers were scheduled to take part in the live segment. While the conversation focused on the special impact of Benny, Beverly’s Angels Hero Kits, and how Flavors of 5th helps support these efforts, something meaningful happened naturally in the background.

As the officers were about to be invited into the interview, a genuine moment of positive community engagement unfolded right before everyone’s eyes.

"Police Constables Cameron Peacock and Michael Jones have been recognised for their outstanding courage, professionalism, and dedication at the recent Avon and Somerset Police Force Awards.

While working a night shift in Bristol, the officers were suddenly flagged down during a rapidly developing and critical incident. With very limited information about what had happened, they immediately stepped forward to help. They provided essential first aid to save a person’s life, secured the scene, and took actions that ultimately contributed to multiple arrests.

Cameron, who joined Avon and Somerset Police in July 2021, said he felt extremely honoured to receive the nomination. He explained that the officers encountered the emergency completely without warning and had to respond immediately. Knowing their actions helped save someone’s life is something he says he will remember with pride throughout his policing career.

He also praised his colleagues, explaining that his team immediately stopped what they were doing to provide support during the incident and continued supporting the officers afterward. Cameron said experiences like this remind him of the positive difference police officers can make every day, whether helping someone experiencing a crisis or protecting members of the public during challenging situations.

Michael said that choosing one proudest moment from his policing career would be difficult. For him, the greatest satisfaction comes from helping make South Gloucestershire safer, removing dangerous individuals from the streets, and taking every opportunity to be proactive.

He described receiving recognition for their actions as an honour and said incidents of this seriousness may not happen every day, but having dependable colleagues and a strong team makes an enormous difference when they do.

Cameron’s line manager, who has worked alongside him for more than four years, also praised his professionalism, dedication, and willingness to support less-experienced officers.

After learning about the incident, the manager said Cameron’s actions came as no surprise. His immediate response reflected the qualities he consistently demonstrates as an officer: experience, compassion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to serving and protecting the public.

Their actions that night showed how quickly an ordinary shift can become a life-or-death emergency, and how courage, teamwork, and decisive action can make all the difference.

"Derbyshire Police Armed Response Officer PC Louisa Anderson has been nominated for the Police Bravery Awards 2026 following her courageous actions during a life-threatening emergency.

While assisting colleagues with the ex*****on of a warrant, PC Anderson encountered a man who was repeatedly causing himself critical injuries. With only seconds to respond, she remained calm and made crucial decisions aimed at preserving his life.

Drawing on her previous experience as a Combat Medic with the Royal Army Medical Corps, along with advanced medical training from her role as a fi****ms officer, PC Anderson immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation.

After deploying her TASER to create an opportunity to intervene safely, she removed her body armour so she could squeeze through a narrow opening. She then disarmed the man and immediately began providing emergency medical care until additional help arrived.

Despite the significant danger to her own safety, PC Anderson remained focused on saving a life.

Her courage, composure, medical expertise, and willingness to place herself in harm’s way helped prevent what could have become a tragic outcome.

Her actions represent the highest standards of policing and have earned her a thoroughly deserved nomination for the Police Bravery Awards 2026.

"PCs Jack Civill-Williams and Amy Montague of Avon and Somerset Police are being praised for their bravery after rescuing an elderly woman from her smoke-filled home during a rapidly spreading house fire in Yate.

The officers were returning from a call when they noticed smoke rising from a property on Witcombe. Trusting their instincts, they immediately went to investigate and discovered a serious fire spreading quickly through the property.

Neighbours alerted them that an elderly woman was still inside the adjoining home.

With thick smoke already entering the house and conditions becoming increasingly dangerous, the officers had little time to act. They made the courageous decision to go inside and find her.

The woman was frail and unable to move quickly, making the rescue even more urgent. Despite the smoke and growing danger around them, PCs Civill-Williams and Montague remained calm. They carefully guided her downstairs and successfully brought her outside to safety.

Their willingness to enter a dangerous, smoke-filled property without hesitation helped prevent what could have become a devastating tragedy.

For their courage, quick thinking, and commitment to protecting someone in immediate danger, the two officers were nominated for the Police Federation Bravery Awards.

When seconds mattered, they stepped forward.

"As the COVID-19 pandemic changed daily life across the country, Spokane Police Officer Richie Plunkett found his role evolving far beyond traditional law enforcement.

A neighbourhood resource officer assigned to downtown Spokane, Plunkett spends much of his time helping people experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges and personal crises. When the pandemic forced businesses to close and reduced the availability of shelters and support services, many vulnerable people were left with nowhere to turn.

Rather than focusing solely on enforcement, Plunkett dedicated his efforts to connecting people with the help they needed. He directed individuals to available shelters, guided them toward safer places to stay and worked to ensure they had access to food and other essential resources whenever possible.

With many public programmes operating at limited capacity, progress became even more difficult for those trying to rebuild their lives. Plunkett recognised that many people were frightened, isolated and uncertain about the future, so he chose compassion over punishment whenever he could.

To make life a little easier, he also carried basic necessities provided by his family, including clean socks, gloves, tissues and hand sanitiser. He regularly handed these items to people he met while on patrol, reminding them that someone still cared about their well-being during an incredibly difficult time.

Plunkett said helping others has always been at the heart of his work, and the pandemic only reinforced that mission. His actions demonstrated that policing is not just about enforcing laws but also about supporting people through hardship, offering dignity, hope and practical assistance when they need it most.

His quiet acts of kindness made a meaningful difference to many members of the Spokane community during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.
