A CONCERT OF BIRDS. "Paulette Tavormina presents new work that continues on her #Flowers, #Fish, #Birds & #Fantasies series. In a selection of exquisite still life #photographs that recall #painterly perspective reminiscent of 17th century Old Master paintings, Tavormina uses props such as antique bird cages, moss, insects, birds’ nests and leaves from her home in Connecticut, to look at the #art historical roots of the genre. The meaning of each object is often multi-layered as this series in particular is autobiographical in #nature."
.
“I’m in love with the old masters, totally fascinated with them,” Tavormina says. “But I create my own personal story within each work. The themes are so universal — #love,#loss, #death — so it is all pretty simple.” per @robertmanngallery

ROPEMAKER. In 1971, Neil Folberg spent six months living and photographing in Macedonia, then part of Yugoslavia. He made an intimate series of images that depict the resilient people who live on this hard land. He was subsequently banned and his photographs censored by the government of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia.
.
Folberg photographed the land and people in villages, towns, in their homes, in the streets and in their fields, funded by a grant from the University of California, Berkeley. This show is part of the Manofim Jerusalem Contemporary Arts Festival and is the first exhibition of this series since 1974. Most of the prints displayed are unique vintage prints. per @vnfgallery

SO IT GOES. "Miho Kajioka is presenting new work which relates to the concept of time, memory and location. The series consists of intuitive images of fragments of her daily life, from various periods and against changing backdrops around Amsterdam and Antwerp.
.
Kajioka regards herself more as a painter/drawer than as a photographer. She feels that photographic techniques help her to create works that fully express her artistic vision. The focused, creative and respectful way in which she uses the medium of photography to create her works seems to fit in the tradition of Japanese art that is characterized by the specifically Japanese sense of beauty: wabi sabi. Wabi has been described as ‘serene attention to simple things’ and sabi as ‘beauty acquired through the patina of time’ as described by Huis Marseille in Amsterdam in their exhibition A beautiful Moment about Japanese photography." per @ibasho_gallery.

QUEEN MARY. " When Alanna Airitam (b. 1971, Queens, NY) was studying the history of art, she noticed the absence of black people in the history of Western art. This exclusion is familiar to many dark-skinned people who are used to seeing themselves represented in paintings and films as domestic workers, slaves or barbarians. By inviting African Americans to pose in the style of classic Dutch portraiture, Airitam reclaims art history, shining a light on the racial disparity in her series, The Golden Age." per @catherineedelmangallery .

How do you see me? A compelling show by three women who confront the way African Americans are perceived in art, the work place, and through their physical appearance - featuring photographs by Alanna Airitam, Endia Beal and Medina Dugger. .

LILIUM CANDIDUM. Ori Gersht "has used the genre of still life painting to explore the fragile nature of existence and the duality between what is enduring and what is momentary, a contradiction embedded in the very nature of photography
.
During Gersht’s childhood in Israel, it was common practice to visit the countryside and collect what were referred to as the “flowers of Israel”. Considered symbols of the connection between the Jewish people and their land, the plants were collected to the point of near-extinction.
.
Gersht procured or cultivated specimens, including cyclamen, Iris Atropurpurea, and the Madonna lily, all of which have played a significant role in Israeli and European cultural histories. Then, in a highly choreographed studio session, Gersht exploded each flowering plant with a bullet fired from a customized air rifle. Using an 8 x 10 camera and Polaroid film and a high-resolution digital camera to capture the event simultaneously,
.
Gersht has captured two different realities, one of which is so technically precise as to exceed the capabilities of human vision and the other of which has the dreamlike quality of a memory." per @yanceyrichardsongallery

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SISTER "is a meditation on the emotional resonance of loss, family history, and family future through the land – a landscape that is grounded in reality yet also distorted through time and displacement. It was inspired by visiting the Mississippi Delta where American photographer Molly Lamb's father grew up and where she and her brother spent time with their grandparents when they were very young.
.
When she was a child, the last words her father said to her brother were, “Take care of your sister.” Without a family home to return to, the landscape becomes the place that harbors history and memory. The land engulfs and it provides respite. It haunts nightmares and it eases them away." per @molly.lamb

REFILL. "Traveling to Mukono, Uganda to photograph the water resources in a region with limited access to safe water, Woudt transforms a documentary project into a visual poem. Talismans permeate the series — water jugs, hands — resulting in an allegorical and cohesive body of work distinguished by a blend of classicism and contemporary post-production techniques. CHAMBERS STREET. "John Chiara handcrafted a custom 50” x 40” camera designed to capture Manhattan’s soaring verticality in kaleidoscopic color and with hyperreal clarity. Driving the enormous camera around the city in the bed of a commercial pickup truck, Chiara photographs NYC’s streets and its architecture with equal admiration for glass office towers, Beaux-Arts facades and the backsides of 19th century tenements.
.
Through the precision barrel lens, images are projected directly onto the scroll of color photographic paper inserted into the camera. During exposure, Chiara burns, dodges and filters the light entering through the lens, working to change the temperature of light and spectrum of color as if in the darkroom." per @yossimilo.

BOY & HIS DOG. Weiner’s photographs are celebrated for their perceptive depiction of everyday life in New York City's close-knit neighborhoods of the 1940s. Weiner focused on New York’s poorer children, possibly because she identified with them but more so because she wanted to tell a story of perseverance and hope. For Weiner, children surviving the rough-and-tumble city streets became a symbol of fortitude. per @stevenkashergallery.

CONEY ISLAND. Bruce Davidson "began taking photographs at the age of ten in Oak Park, Illinois. While attending Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University, he continued to further his knowledge and develop his passion. He was later drafted into the army and stationed near Paris. There he met Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founders of the renowned cooperative photography agency, Magnum Photos.

PROFONDEURS. “Béatrice Helg's art holds a unique place within the tradition of staged and constructed photography that evolved in the 1980's. Her beautifully composed abstract images play between reality and illusion. With found materials - rusted iron, steel plates or sheets of glass, the artist creates monumental spaces, which echo with a timeless, archaeological resonance. In her silent universe the murmur of a latent metaphor can be imperceptibly heard." per Joel Soroka Gallery

BOB DYLAN. “During the 60s, Jerry Schatzberg's portrait and fashion photographs conveyed intimacy and directness. There exists an honesty, a sense of the real, a sense of the moment when the facade is broken. During the 70s, Schatzberg participated in the renaissance of the American cinema. He directed films such as: Puzzle of a Downfall Child, The Panic in Needle Park, Scarecrow, and Street Smart. His films mark an important time in the history of film when the solid narrative and plot were at their strongest, before the arrival of the world of special effects." per @staleywisegallery
