Most people know Juneteenth as the day the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were free.

But did you know Texas later became the first state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a holiday? Or that a woman named Opal Lee spent decades advocating for Juneteenth to become a federal holiday in 2021?

From the red, white, and blue Juneteenth flag to the red foods that symbolize resilience, freedom, and joy, every tradition tells a story.

Freedom is something we celebrate. Equality is something we continue to pursue.

The Knicks Championship Parade steps off at 10 AM, making its way through the downtown before ending at City Hall, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani - Commentary News Managed by S. D. will officially present the team with the Keys to the City. After a season built on resilience, belief, and showing up night after night, tomorrow belongs to New York.

If you’re heading out, bring your umbrellas, your orange and blue, and your city pride. Rain or shine, this is history.

This Friday, June 19, I’ll be hosting the Juneteenth celebration at Roy Wilkins Park. As a Queens girl, there’s something special about returning to one of my favorite parks to celebrate freedom, culture, and community.

Shout out to Tunisia Morrison for bringing this joint festival together and allowing me to be part of it. Looking forward to meeting neighbors, supporting local vendors, and celebrating the joy that Juneteenth represents.

They say I’m the lucky charm.

But luck has nothing to do with it.

I’ve been here since the season started. Every playoff game. Every storyline. Every celebration. Every heartbreak. Showing up for my city the same way this city has always shown up for me.

I don’t think my purpose is to predict what happens next.

I think my purpose is to remind people to be present while they’re planning for the future.

Because one day the dream is ahead of you. The next day you’re living it.

The Knicks are champions.

And for the first time in a long time, New York gets to celebrate together.
