I saw three films in that Dracula 4K HD set, with a couple more to go. If you are a fan of the Universal horror films, you must get this upgrade, as you will see the films in the best quality. Superb. That said, I had some real problems with Son of Dracula. I like Chaney, but here he just doesn't look the part. Good on the resume, but the film is a misfire and almost put me to sleep. I was surprised by House of Frankenstein, even with the Dracula segment that appears tagged on. J. Carrol Naish was superb and his part was the emotional highlight of this film. And Strange in HD is fearsome. Never felt his horror as now.

Forgot to post this the other day, but there is now a 4K HD of all the old Universal Dracula films, not just the first one with Lugosi. Streeted a couple of months ago. So, the quality should be excellent. Hopefully, the rest (Frankenstein, etc.) will follow next year and thereafter.

This seems to be the stand-alone CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN. If I am reading and understanding the description from Hammer, this is NOT available in the States, but I am sure Hammer Heads in America will find a way. And it is on pre-order.

I’ve seen the new Hammer and Amicus films, and my reaction is opposite of what I thought it would be. Though the new Hammer, DOCTOR JEKYLL, has many unlikeable characters, the main one, Eddie Izzard, is excellent and believable as a descendent of the notorious Jekyll. I figured he would be a distraction, but no. The film is professional, but I wish they would drop the newer characters, who just are not my cup of tea, even as bad guys or gals. I don’’t see this film making a splash on the screen, which it hasn’t so far, and probably never will.

As for the new Amicus, IN THE GRIP OF TERROR.... It is very amateurish. The pacing is slow, and the acting, except for a couple of older actors, is terrible. A lot of fake eyes bulging with horror, and fake portentous sayings. The surprise to me is that the director and actor and maker of the new Amicus, Lawrie Brewster, had been much better as a director in the previous films that I’ve seen or sampled. Here he seems to have done too much in creating a British film studio, but without the quality he should have paid attention in this film (no obvious Bava lighting), even if it took another year. A few scenes do provoke some fear but are killed off by that acting. This is not your old Amicus. No way. So, good and bad, but not in the manner one would think.

Due at the beginning of December: The Scars of Dracula, in 4K HD. Then following is the worst of Frankenstein series, The Horror of Frankenstein, where the monster gives the middle finger. Well, I will be getting Scars... Very nice cover for Scars taken from the Italian poster.

Last night I saw a film on my computer, MOSS ROSE, that was a horror film from 1947 that most have not heard of, including me. The film is with Victor Mature, Ethel Barrymore, Vincent Price, and others. Lots of misty old-time London and shadows and suspense. The film leaves horror for a while but goes back to it near the end with a vengeance. The movie is based on a work by Marjorie Bowen, whom I have never heard of, too. She used a lot of pseudonyms, but some of her novels and short stories are available online. I ordered a paperback to know her better. One of her books is BLACK MAGIC, which has been printed by Penguin these days, but the original goes back decades ago. Here is an image from MOSS ROSE and Mature:

I can't direcly share but I got the photos and annoucement from George Reis' Hammer DVD/Blu-Ray group. These are not the best of Hammer, but they are going to be available and have loads of featurettes and those small books. THE SCARS OF DRACULA and THE HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Yes, next year, Halloween time, HORROR OF DRACULA/DRACULA will be released, uncut with all the bells and whistles, ergo supplements. Apparently, new footage also has been found, I assume a few seconds here and there.
