Two women stood in the aisle of a packed bus, one in an orange dress and one leaning on a cane.
A young man looked up and offered his seat to the woman in orange. She sat down, quietly let the air out of the balloon under her dress, then got back up and pointed the grandmother toward it. The older woman took the seat with both hands still on her cane.
The balloon worked exactly once, and she spent it on the woman who actually needed to sit down.

A pack of diapers hit the woman in the wheelchair square in the face while she sat in the Walmart aisle.
The man in the leather jacket did it grinning, then took the water bottle she was reaching for and walked off with it. Two aisles later he pulled down a loaf of bread and set it in her lap instead, and she was still wiping her eyes when he came out the front doors carrying two full bags and those same diapers for her.
He threw the diapers at her once and paid for them the second time, and that second time is the one she will remember.

She met him outside the U.S. Army Garrison gate in a blue dress with her arms open.
Then she pulled out a sharpened stick and pushed it into her belly. The balloon burst and she turned and walked off while he dropped to his knees on the pavement. He lifted his head at the sound of laughing and saw her coming back with twin babies in red outfits, one on each arm.
He came home expecting one baby and knelt in the dirt for nothing, because she had two waiting for him.

The man in the stained plaid shirt sat down at a table inside VIRUM and waited.
Two waiters walked up, pinched their noses shut and turned away without taking his order. The third one, a young guy in glasses, set a plate of pasta in front of him and smiled. That guest peeled off his mask and his dirty clothes at the table, and under them was a black suit with a CEO badge.
A plate of pasta was all it took to tell which of the three still saw a customer.

A girl in worn out clothes was snapping a photo of her brother beside a blue Porsche in the Walmart parking lot.
The owner came out with two grocery bags, dropped them on the hood and shouted at both of them to get away. They were already running when he set the bags down again and went after them. He caught up, put a hand on each shoulder, said something quiet, then walked them back and opened the passenger door.
Shouting took him two seconds. Fixing it took a whole ride, and the boy got to hold the wheel.

The baker in white walked outside and handed a whole loaf to the man sitting on the sidewalk.
His manager came out swinging, tore the bread out of the man's hands, threw it down and ground it under his shoe. That man on the pavement stood up, pulled off the orange shirt and the ripped pants, and put on a jacket with a CEO badge already pinned to it. The manager badge came off his chest a minute later and went onto the baker's white uniform.
One loaf of bread cost a manager his title and handed it to the baker who gave it away.

Water ran down the red haired man's face while three teens laughed and walked off from the bus stop.
He tapped his ear to mime a phone call. The veteran in the wheelchair passed over his own smartphone without asking a single question. Minutes later a blue Bugatti rolled up to that same stop, and the man came back in a black suit carrying a gold case stuffed with cash.
Lending a phone cost him one call. It came back as a case he could barely lift.

The coins hit the tile floor before the mother could finish counting them at the Duck Cinema window.
She carried her son back toward the street in tears. The man wearing the CEO badge caught up with her on the sidewalk and walked her straight back inside. He filled a popcorn bucket for her son and seated them both in the front row, while the cashier ended her shift on her knees at the entrance and left without a job.
A handful of coins was too small for one cashier to respect, and it turned out to be exactly what her job was worth.

Behind the glass she pushed a sharpened stick into the belly under her shirt.
The balloon burst while her husband in the orange uniform dropped his head into his hands. She walked back through the door minutes later with their real baby in her arms, no glass between them this time.
A popped balloon bought him ninety seconds of panic and a lifetime of hearing the word DADDY.

An elderly woman was planting flowers with her white poodle beside her when a man in a light suit kicked her pots to pieces.
He and his friend laughed and climbed into their blue convertible while she cried over the broken garden. The poodle trotted off, rolled happily in a mud puddle, then jumped into their open car and shook the filth all over their suits and seats.
Wreck what someone loves and the mess has a way of finding you.
