He Tried To Argue His Way Out Of A Ticket

Craziest Traffic Stop Caught on Bodycam - Officer
Abandons One Stop to Chase Speeding Driver Near Motel
Drive Pilot Station (January 9, 2023)
In this intense body-worn camera footage from January 9, 2023, an officer with a local police department is already handling a routine traffic stop when a gray Dodge Charger with New Mexico plates speeds past. The officer leaves the first stop, jumps in his vehicle, and pursues the Charger, pulling it over near East Motel Drive next to a Pilot gas station in the Southwest United States desert landscape.
The driver, who says he was heading to the gas station from Arizona for cheaper fuel, immediately becomes confrontational. He questions how the officer could track his speed while standing outside a different vehicle, repeatedly demands the exact speed reading method, and challenges the legitimacy of the stop.
The officer explains the vehicle was observed going over the limit (around 40 in a 30/40 zone area) and that the driver accelerated right in front of him after being told to slow down.

What follows is a heated roadside exchange. The driver refuses to provide his license at first, claims he is an attorney, questions the officer's experience ("you're brand new"), demands a supervisor, and argues that abandoning the prior stop invalidates this one. He films the interaction, tells the officer to back up, and insists there is no valid reason for the stop.
The officer remains firm, asks for documents, notes the plate was already run, and offers what began as a verbal warning until the driver's escalating behavior changes the tone.
Eventually the officer ends the contact, tells the driver to have a good day, and returns to handle the original stop.
Radio traffic and on-scene details confirm the location near the Pilot and the New Mexico-plated gray Charger.
Full Axon Body 3 footage captures every word and reaction under clear desert skies.
This video breaks down the complete encounter for educational and commentary purposes: how a simple speed observation escalated, the driver's legal claims versus on-camera actions, officer decision-making when leaving one stop for another, and the importance of calm compliance during traffic stops. Chandler Arizona Cops Call His Camera Suspicious

Know your rights during a police detention before you end up in handcuffs.
First Amendment Audit Chandler Arizona PD 250 E Chicago St USA November 2017 public photography police encounter know your rights bodycam style footage law enforcement accountability cop watch and audit First Amendment rights USA Arizona city Chandler
Folks this one goes back to November 2017 at the Chandler Police Department main station right there at 250 E Chicago Street in Chandler Arizona 85225 USA. A citizen journalist with Valley Community Watch showed up on a regular day to exercise the First Amendment right to film in public. He walked the memorial plaza the courtyard and then straight into the open public lobby. Everything was out in the open records counter forms medicine drop off bin the works. Patrol cars rolling in and out of the station were fair game too since they were in plain public view.

Officer Brian Hawkins came out after someone called in about the filming. The auditor did what any of us would do and calmly asked for the name and badge number.
Hawkins pointed at the name tag a couple times and acted like that was good enough. When the auditor kept it respectful but firm about policy the response basically came down to not needing to follow it. Other officers on scene were just as hesitant. They called the whole thing not normal and therefore suspicious even though nobody ever said stop filming and they confirmed he was not being detained. Meanwhile some guy walked in and dropped stuff in the medicine bin with zero questions asked. That contrast stuck out.
Supervisors eventually rolled up. They agreed identification is department policy yet the attitude from the first contact never really improved. The auditor laid it out clear on camera that public photography is protected under the First Amendment that citizens get to judge how officers treat the public and that pointing at a tag is not the same as stating your name and number the way you would in court. He decided against filing a formal complaint right then because he did not have solid identifiers but made it plain he expected better next time.
As of 2026 there is still no publicly reported lawsuit settlement or cash payout connected specifically to this Valley Community Watch encounter with Officer Brian Hawkins. The original video keeps circulating as a solid example of how these police encounters can go when someone simply exercises their rights in Chandler Arizona
USA. No court case resolved the matter and the focus stayed on education rather than personal claims. Related transparency talks continue around Arizona law enforcement but this particular audit stands on its own as documented history.
