The Cologne Affair is back Saturday, October 25th 10am ET – and we couldn’t be happier to welcome the legendary sound pioneer and analog synthesizer icon Suzanne Ciani to Cologne.
After her first visit to the city during Week-End Fest 2021, Ciani returned this time to stay a couple of days. Together with host Jan Lankisch, she spent a wonderful time — sharing meals, going to the cinema, and, of course, visiting the Cologne Cathedral, which she had never seen before.
But the main reason for Ciani's visit was to play iconic Buchla concerts. In a brutalist church in Cologne’s northern district, the 79-year-old artist cast her spell over a sold-out audience.Around the concert, there was plenty of time for deep conversations — about her early days in Los Angeles and New York in the 1970s, her work as a sound designer for commercials, and her collaborations with a new generation of musicians. Get ready for a truly special, intimate, and inspiring episode with one of the most remarkable musicians of the past fifty years.

Formed in Leicester, UK in 1992, Prolapse were the perhaps the antidote to the flag-waving, nostalgic Britpop infusion to that decade; a chaotic, repetitive, sometimes dream-pop-leaning unit fronted by the duo of Linda Steelyard and Mick Derrick, whose presence and sometimes opposing chemistry heightened the clamor and contrasts going on in the music. After some amazing records, they called it a day in 2000, sporadically regrouping for gigs in 2015 and 2022 before full-on reuniting last year to produce their excellent new LP I Wonder When They’re Going To Destroy Your Face, out right now. With members’ interests immersed in the DNA of such musical bastions as Can, The Fall, Wire, Branca and even Throbbing Gristle and Faust, Prolapse’s full-on rock trajectory live and on record has been nothing short of powerful, and their return to UK stages in October is met with high anticipation from still-dedicated fans. Tune in Wednesday, October 15th 4-6pm ET as EVR’s Brian Turner traces the lineage with Linda and Mick and catches up on lost decades and a new era for the band. Acclaimed poet Anne Waldman will be joining Ergot Records’ Adrian Rew Thursday, September 4th on the earlier side of the 8-10pm ET show to talk about her new record Your Devotee In Rags, which is out now on Siren Records and from which they’ll be playing a couple tracks. If you miss it live, tune in to the program’s archive at eastvillageradio.com/ergot-records/

From Bandcamp:

Your Devotee in Rags is a missive to this age of patriarchal power. Its songs and poems are designed to specifically confront that power and hold it to account. Taking such activist inspiration from musicians like Lido Pimienta and Tanya Tagaq, musically YDIR blends acoustic and electronic genres, waltzes, laments and Pauls Boutique-era Beastie Boys mash-ups all with the intent of creating a new artistic headspace: sonic poetry. The cultural direction is forward, the earbuds open up the stereo field. Listening to YDIR is, in a word, empowering.

he texts of these sonic poems are drawn from The IOVIS Trilogy: Colours in the Mechanism of Concealment (Coffee House Press, 2011).

Anne Waldman: voice, text
Andrew Whiteman: sounds, programming, voice on track 8
Black Howard: drums
with
Ariel Engle: voice on track 5 & 7
Kate Fenner: voice on track 1
Naomi Klein: voice on track 2
Kyo Maclear: voice on track 10
Martha Wainwright: voice on track 1 & 6
Devin Brahja Waldman: saxophone on track 9

About Anne, from her website:

Internationally recognized and acclaimed poet Anne Waldman has been an active member of the “Outrider” experimental poetry community, a culture she has helped create and nurture for over four decades as writer, editor, teacher, performer, magpie scholar, infra-structure curator, and cultural/political activist. Her poetry is recognized in the lineages of the Beat, New York School, and Black Mountain trajectories of the New American Poetry. But has raised the bar as a feminist, activist and powerful performer. She has read in the streets as well as numerous larger venues such as the Dodge Literary Festival in the USA and the Jaipur Literature Festival in India, the T.S. Eliot Memorial Foundation at Harvard University, and continues to teach poetics all over the world. She remains a highly original “open field investigator” of consciousness, committed to the possibilities of radical shifts of language and states of mind to create new modal structures and montages of attention. Her work is prophetic, multidisciplinary, energetic, passionate, panoramic, fierce at times.

Loss of a great legend today, Eddie Palmieri appeared on the scene in 1961 adding heft to traditional bigband sounds with Conjunto La Perfecta, going on to fuse his Puerto Rican sound identity into a myriad of forms that included American jazz, Brasilian and Cuban influences to revolutionize/modernize Latin music with a firm foot planted in history. He's photographed here as a guest on East Village Radio's Bobbito Garcia Radio Show on November 11, 2013. You can find an excerpt on You Tube. RIP Eddie.
