THE BEST SCREENWRITERS OF ALL TIME:

Alfred Hitchcock often stated that to make a good film you need three things: the script, the script, and the script. NEW YORK Magazine gathered 41 current leading screenwriters and asked them to list the Best Screenwriters of All Time. Here are the top ten:

(1) Billy Wilder,
(2) Ethan and Joel Coen,
(3) Robert Towne,
(4) Quentin Tarantino,
(5) Francis Ford Coppola,
(6) William Goldman,
(7) Charlie Kaufman,
(8) Woody Allen,
(9) Nora Ephron,
(10) Ernest Lehman.

A terrible mistake is the omission of Joseph L. Mankiewicz. He wrote the screenplay for 48 films winning back-to-back Oscars for A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve.

Film Distribution---Getting Help

WOMEN'S RIGHTS:

Much has been written recently about Kate Millett and her breakthrough book, Sexual Politics, about women's rights. More eloquent, and more pithy, than the books by Millett, Betty Friedan, and Gloria Steinem, are the comments and advice by the late Nora Ephron, delivered at commencement at Wellesley College, her alma mater:

One of the things people always say to you if you get upset is, 'don't take it personally.' But, listen hard to what's going on and, please, I beg you, take it personally. Understand: every attack on Hillary Clinton for not knowing her place is an attack on you. Underneath almost all those attacks are the words: 'get back, get back to where you once belonged.' When Elizabeth Dole pretends that she isn't serious about her career, that is an attack on you. The acquittal of O.J. Simpson is an attack on you. Any move to limit abortion rights is an attack on you---whether or not you believe in abortion. Whatever you choose, however many roads you take, I hope that you choose not to be a lady. I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And, I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women. Above all, be the heroine in your life, not the victim.

Boutique Streaming Services

UPDATE:

Covey E. Simon said recently in The Wall Street Journal that In the shadow of Netflix, smaller streaming services (boutique sites) have emerged catering to subscribers who prefer such genre films as horror, animated, foreign, classic oldies, and automobiles.

He cited examples such as MUBI, which offers art house films and foreign classics, BROWN SUGAR, which features a collection of 1970s films starring black actors in lead roles, and SHUDDER, which plans to focus on horror, and spooky films.

With these new developments, CINEMAflix DIRECT plans to add to its existing mainstream digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, and Hulu, many of these newer genre-specific outlets. Part of what makes the digital age so powerful is the ability to target your specific audience, whoever that might be.

There Are No Guarantees

UPDATE:

The question often asked by filmmakers is, Will my film make money? It's an understandable question. Much money and angst went into making the film. Now the filmmaker wants to know,
Will it make enough to pay my investors and put some change in my pocket?

I hear these questions every day, and each time I give the same answer: In the film business, there are no guarantees, only opportunities. Your job as a filmmaker is to seize these opportunities.

Even the big Hollywood studios, with their high-salaried marketing executives and million-dollar budgets, can't predict the market performance of their films. Just note such debacles as Logan Lucky, Dunkirk, and Baby Driver.

One strategy is to consider our CINEMAflix DISTRIBUTION Program. It's a program that offers opportunities: an opportunity to give your film a one-week theatrical run in a highly regarded art house theater in New York and/or Los Angeles; an opportunity to have a professional publicist promote your film; an opportunity to have your film encoded and submitted to the major digital platforms; and an opportunity to market DVDs of your film to the major DVD wholesalers.

With our program, you get to cover all the important bases. We can't offer you a 100% guarantee, but we can offer you a better shot to achieve success.

How Many Streaming Platforms Should You Pursue?

UPDATE:

There are now well over 200 streaming platforms out there with more opening up each day. For an independent filmmaker this can become a challenging predicament. One option can be to book the film on every platform as long as there is no cost. But managing too many platforms can be time-consuming and easily lead to a nervous breakdown.

The answer is to focus on a few of the major platforms in the two most meaningful categories: Subscription (SVOD) and Transactional (TVOD):

Subscription (SVOD): You pay a monthly fee and, in exchange, you can watch an unlimited number of films. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Sony Playstation.

Transactional (TVOD): You pay each time you click to see a film. iTunes, Google Play, Fandango Now.

For one low price, $950.00, our CINEMAflix DIRECT Program will help get your film on many of the major digital platforms. Check out our website, www.cinemaflixdirect.com, for more details and costs, or contact me directly as 1-212-628-4990 or [email protected].

Seize the Opportunity

UPDATE:

Some filmmakers spend a great deal of time, effort, and money searching for a distributor who will offer guarantees: a guarantee that the film will get good reviews; a guarantee that the box office will be strong; a guarantee that the film will be accepted by every major digital platform; and a guarantee that the film will be profitable. But here's the reality: Any distributor who could guarantee even one of these things would be wealthier than Warren Buffett and Bill Gates combined.

Our CINEMAflix DISTRIBUTION Program, however, does offer filmmakers opportunities that will increase the chances for success: The program includes a full one-week run in a prestigious art house theater in New York and/or Los Angeles; the services of a professional, well-connected publicist to contact the critics, write and send press releases, set up interviews (when possible), reach out to selective organizations and clubs, and compile and distribute production notes; the encoding, doing the QC (Quality Control), and submitting the film to the major digital platforms and cable stations; and marketing DVDs of the film to the major wholesalers handling the retail chains, schools, colleges, libraries, and military installations.

Streaming Films Has Become a Deluge

UPDATE:

More than 168 million viewers accessed films on their smart phone in the last quarter of 2017. While traditional TV has far greater reach (292 million), a medium that barely existed 10 years ago now gets more video viewing than desktop or DVD viewing.--Variety.com.

Recently, Disney announced its move to offer two streaming outlets: one for films and the other for sports. Robert Iger, CEO of Disney, justified the huge investment as follows: It's high time we got in this business. The profitability and the revenue-generating capability of this initiative is substantially greater than the business models we're currently served by.

Streaming films has indeed become a deluge as new outlets are popping up each day.

So, goodness gracious, how do independent filmmakers with limited resources, with minimal awareness of what's going on, cope with these breathtaking developments?

One quick, easy, and economical way is to book their film on our CINEMAflix DIRECT Program. For a basic cost of $950.00, we'll encode the film, do the necessary QC (Quality Control), and prepare and submit the package to the major digital platforms and cable VOD stations like iTunes, Amazon, Hulu, Fandango Now, Google Playstation, Sony Play, TubiTV, Hoopla, Xfinity, and Spectrum.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: we'll add more outlets as they become available so the film can be accessed by millions of viewers from around the world.

Evaluating a Digital Distributor or Aggregator

UPDATE

Filmmakers who want to thrive in today's marketplace must work to get their films listed on the major digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, and Hulu. A listing on such platforms offers huge possibilities: (1) The film can be accessed in almost every major country in the world, (2) Once listed it can remain on the platforms for a long period of time, maybe even months, and (3) Income from streaming can be steady and substantial.

The agonizing question is what company do you choose to submit your film to these digital platforms? Who is going to be your aggregator?

The answer is simple: use this checklist and compare services:

1. Is there an up-front cost?

2. Is there a charge for encoding and doing the QC (Quality Control)?

3. What are the digital outlets and cable stations being offered?

4. What percentage is the distributor keeping as a fee?

5. Are there deductions for expenses and overhead?

Our CINEMAflix DIRECT Program offers one of the best deals for filmmakers interested in getting their films on these platforms. For a flat fee of $950.00, we'll encode the film, do the Quality Control (QC), compile the package, and submit it to the major digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Hulu, Fandango Now, Google, Sony, Vudu, TubiTV, Hoopla, and more platforms as they become available. Check out our website, www.cinemaflixdirect.com, for details. Or contact me directly at 1-212-628-4990 or [email protected].

Showing Your Film Around the World

UPDATE:

There was a time, not too long ago, when filmmakers would spend a great deal of money and a great deal of time booking their films in worldwide markets. However, it became very difficult. Overseas distributors were only interested in action films and films with big-name stars.

To make matters worse, indie filmmakers who were lucky enough to get an overseas booking, were now having a tough time getting paid.

Things indeed looked bleak.

But now, it's all changed. The emergence of hundreds of streaming outlets has leveled the playing field. Finally, for peanuts, indie filmmakers can now have their films shown in almost every country in the world.

Even better, our CINEMAflix DIRECT Program enables filmmakers to achieve this for one set price, $950.00.

The Program includes all of the following:

* DIGITAL PLATFORMS. We'll do the encoding, the QC (Quality Control), and the submissions to the major digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Hulu, Google, Sony, Fandango Now, and TubiTV.

*CABLE VOD. We have arrangements with two of the major cable stations: Spectrum (Time Warner) and Xfinity (Comcast).

With CINEMAflix DIRECT, even the small-time filmmaker can now be a global power.

RANDOM THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS AND THAT:

Can you believe that back in the '50s, C**t Manufacturing ran ads for guns? The tagline was, Give yourself a present you've probably wanted for years---a fine C**t Handgun. ...Also during that period, sexism in advertising went unquestioned. Here's a tagline for the Kenwood Multi-Mix: The Chef does everything but cook---That's what wives are for. ...A must-read book is Cinematic Overtures: How to Read Opening Scenes by Annette Innsdorf. ...NEW YORK Magazine also omitted Paddy Chayefsky from its list of All Time Best Screenwriters. He received three Oscars for Marty (1955), The Hospital (1971), and Network (1976). And he received an Oscar nomination for The Goddess (1958). ...When Disney cancelled its deal with Netflix it gave up an income stream of around $300 million a year. Their strategy is that income from their new streaming channel will offset this loss. Time will tell.

UPDATE:

Comprehensive film distribution requires success in many different areas: (1) Obtaining theatrical distribution, (2) Publicizing and marketing the film, (3) Encoding and packaging the film for the digital platforms, (4) Submitting the film to the major cable VOD stations, and (5) Marketing DVDs of your film to the large DVD wholesalers.

That's 5 big jobs to do.

Are you willing to do this on your own? Or are you resigned to spending a budget-breaking sum to hire separate specialists for each of these tasks? Or perhaps you can do a few of these jobs yourself and hope for the best.

Our CINEMAflix DISTRIBUTION Program handles ALL 5 jobs for one low price. We're truly the One Call Does It All company. Check out our website, www.cinemaflixdistribution.com, for details and costs, or call me directly at 1-212-628-4990 or [email protected].

Film Distribution Starts with Trying

UPDATE:

Film distribution is hard work. Perhaps even harder than making the film. It's also a skill that's beyond most independent filmmakers who consider themselves artists rather than marketers.

Most filmmakers begin the behemoth process of film distribution with great energy and enthusiasm. But if they don't find success, if the challenges are just too tough, they call it quits. They stop trying and the film dies.

Before the above happens, consider partnering with CINEMAflix DISTRIBUTION. Let us do it all for you. We will hold your hand, walk you through the deadly mine fields, and show you the way to successfully and economically distribute your film.

We follow a set process: First we book your film in a well-known art house theater in New York and/or Los Angeles. We then hook you up with a talented publicist who will contact the film critics, write and send press releases, set up interviews (when possible), reach out to selective organizations and clubs, and compile and distribute production notes. We'll also encode and prepare your film for the digital platforms and cable VOD. As an extra bonus, we'll market DVDs of your film with the major DVD wholesalers. In other words, we thoroughly and comprehensively cover all bases.

Check out our website, www.cinemaflixdistribution.com, for more details and costs, or contact me directly at 1-212-628-4990 or [email protected].

Five Sure Ways to Distribute Your Film

UPDATE:

Most indie filmmakers come to the realization that the hardest part of making a film is deciding how to distribute the film. The big studios have a quick solution: spend millions booking the film around the world and more millions in advertising and publicity.

Obviously, this kind of commitment is beyond the reach of most indie filmmakers. Instead, they must find ways to distribute their films both successfully and inexpensively. Here's my list of your options:

1. Hook up with a distributor willing to give you a substantial advance. Put the check in your pocket and go on making your next film.

2. Pay a hefty upfront fee (plus expenses) and put your films in the hands of an experienced Sales Agent. He or she may or may not come through. It's an expensive way to go, but at least you tried.

3. Do it yourself (DIY). Be prepared to endure months (or maybe years) trying to make all theatrical, video, cable, and DVD arrangements on your own. It will give new meaning to the word madness.

4. Do nothing more than show the film around at festivals and to anyone expressing the least bit of interest (like friends and relatives). And then hope for a miracle.

5. For a modest fee, let a company like CINEMAflix DISTRIBUTION do it all for you. At least you'll know for sure that your film will have a minimum one-week run in a highly regarded art house theater in New York or Los Angeles, a professional publicist will be pushing your film in the media, and that it will be submitted to the major digital platforms and DVD wholesalers.
