Documenting New York state’s biggest tree, and a contender for the National champion, eastern cottonwood, (Populus deltoides). The tree measures 33 feet 9 1/4 inches in circumference and is 108 feet tall. Total of 539 big tree points! It’s located in Rensselaer County, NY. Cottonwood trees are fast-growing, large deciduous trees known for their distinctive fluffy white seeds released in summer, often found near water, used by Native Americans for crafts and medicine, and valued by pioneers for shade and wood.
Male and female cottonwood trees are separate plants (dioecious) with distinct spring flowers: males have reddish, pollen-producing catkins, while females have yellowish-green catkins that develop into the fluffy, cotton-producing seed capsules in summer that gives this tree its name.
