While smart home hubs have provided a solution to the lack of interoperability among different devices to create a better smart home user experience, these hubs often serve little purpose outside of this. As component prices have declined and the market sees increased consolidation around a few communicating technologies, manufacturers are embedding the technology associated with hubs into existing product portfolios. These moves create fewer barriers, provide a better user experience for consumers, and enable vendors to own the customer experience around the smart home. According to the report, global revenue for devices with hub capabilities is expected to increase from $12.6 billion in 2019 to $72.9 billion in 2028 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.6%.

Smart technologies embedded in the home, cars or public spaces can collect and use data from many sources, such as sensors that interact with people or with their personal devices as they go about their daily lives. These smart systems can be used to generate large amounts of data which may include highly sensitive personal information. Responsible use of this data, including respect for individuals’ privacy, must be top of mind for any private sector organization producing and designing such systems. This session will provide considerations for achieving compliance with Canada’s federal private sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), in light of smart technology developments.

How Online Privacy Notices Can Achieve Informed User Consent - from Connected Cities Privacy Summit speaker Stuart Brotman

https://connectedcityusa.com/2019/11/how-online-privacy-notices-can-achieve-informed-user-consent/

The Balancing the Rights of Web Surfers Equally and Responsibly Act, or the Browser Act, has been dormant in Congress since it was introduced last spring. Its most salutary provisions deal with online privacy policies, including a requirement under federal law that users be provided with “clear and conspicuous notice” of the consumer data privacy policies of a communications or technology company, an ability for users to opt in for the collection of sensitive information, and a prohibition on companies denying service to anyone who refuses to waive privacy rights.

HITRUST has incorporated the CCPA standard into HITRUST CSF version 9.3, providing businesses with a strong basis for measuring CCPA compliance as part of their existing assessment and certification processes. Organizations can assess against the CCPA to conclude quickly if they meet the new requirements identified in the law or if there are any gaps that must be remediated.

Given the number of consumers and size of the California economy, the CCPA will have a significant impact on the market as almost every for-profit business in the United States will have to comply with the ruling to “implement and maintain reasonable security procedures and practices” to protect consumer data. The law is serving as a model and has created an expectation among consumers that they can have access to their data, ask for it to be deleted or corrected, and limit its uses.

CIMCON Lighting, the leading global provider of smart city technologies, won the Lux Award for “Connected Lighting Innovation of the Year” last week at a gala held at The Hilton, Park Lane in London.

The Lux Awards are designed to celebrate and reward both creativity and sustainability, recognizing clients and end users that have employed lighting in exceptional ways to improve their lit environment, reduce energy, and achieve business objectives. From over 200 nominations, the judges drew up the initial shortlists, tested products and visited projects across the length and breadth of the UK to see the solutions in action for themselves.

The Dangers of Facial Recognition

https://connectedcityusa.com/2019/11/the-dangers-of-facial-recognition/

Facial recognition has the potential to cause massive privacy violations, and its use causes massive risks that can affect people long after they are exposed to the technology. This is concerning because a recent survey conducted by ProPrivacy.com of 1019 liberal and conservative Americans – revealed that 55% or respondents believe facial recognition should be welcomed into society “as it can have a positive impact on security and safety.” That figure was even higher among conservatives, 63% of whom believe facial recognition should be welcomed with open arms.

Every day solution providers are promising new levels of accessibility, efficiency, security, convenience and environmental protection advancements via IoT based smart city technology. However, a city of sensors and video monitoring devices poses questions about privacy, data protection/security and public safety.

Who does the data belong to? Is the data being used for profit, and if so how? Who is responsible for the legal and privacy compliance implications and what are those implications? How do law enforcement and federal/local government work with technology providers and integrators.

Learn from our group of experts as they speak about the intersection of privacy and technology in developing smart cities, and how they protect privacy by employing impact assessments, implementing privacy by design and default, and utilizing other practices to make the smart city safe, secure, and technologically advanced.

Privacy and cybersecurity are a two-sided coin. When a government agency asks individuals to provide personally identifiable information, many may be comfortable doing so. But if those individuals learn that information may be shared with third parties, such as government contractors, who may use it in wholly unintended ways, they likely would feel far less comfortable sharing that information. And if the third-party data storage system is hacked, the breach can raise serious cybersecurity concerns, both for the integrity of the system and the privacy of the individuals whose information has been obtained by bad actors.

The Smart City Trust Factor

A smart city is powered by technology and data, but it is enabled and sustained by the trust its stakeholders have with the city, its services and service providers, and with each other. When there is no trust, or that trust is lost, people will not use its services, nor will they participate and contribute input and data. The value of smart city services declines as expected outcomes do not materialize and people seek better alternatives.

In this presentation a panel of smart cities and IoT experts will discuss why the topic of trust in the smart city is a foundational one that deserves more attention that is currently given by smart city planners.
