HUGE NEWS: This year, Israel’s main submission to the 2022 #Oscars is the film Let It Be Morning — based on the novel by Palestinian Israeli author Sayed Kashua. At NIF, we have always understood that cultural change is an integral part of social and political change. Let It Be Morning is a 2021 Israeli drama film directed by Eran Kolirin. The story follows a Palestinian citizen of Israel Sami who attends his brother's wedding, then finds himself unable to return home to Jerusalem when a road is blocked by Israeli soldiers. The film unflinchingly delves into the profound and often absurd experience of Palestinian citizens of Israel, who are granted certain rights by the state they live in, while simultaneously treated as threatening outsiders.
We can't overemphasize enough the significance of this film being the official submission to the #Oscars. It’s so rare that the narratives of Palestinian citizens of Israel are given such a high-profile platform in Israel or Palestine, let alone internationally. The film is almost entirely in Arabic — just a few short years after Israel passed the Nation-State Law which demoted Arabic from being an official language. The cast and crew are almost exclusively Palestinian, mostly citizens of Israel. In a context of growing anti-Arab racism in the state of Israel, we at NIF are very aware of the stakes and importance of uplifting art that challenges dominant and harmful narratives. Our grantees are involved in the slow and patient work of creating social, political, and cultural change towards equality, justice and shared society in Israel. This film is a beautiful and delicate depiction of a truly human story. We’re beyond excited for the director, cast, and crew of Let It Be Morning and wish you all the best of luck in your nomination to the #Oscars! We hope The Academy duly considers this incredible piece of art and culture.

In July 2020, Technion scientists crossed a major barrier in the field of renewable energy.
A team of researchers managed to boost the efficiency of BIO-photoelectrochemical cells (a.k.a BIOcells). These biosolar devices have the capacity to convert sunlight into electrical energy. The process is modeled after #photosynthesis - nature's highly efficient way of converting sunlight into chemical energy. A major story.
This time it happened for real: a Government Decision was adopted approving a genuine and meaningful five-year plan to uproot crime and violence. Over recent years we have advocated and accompanied the formulation of such a plan, focusing in particular on the need to address root issues (and not only aspects of policing and enforcement). For five years we have explained that violence and crime are the result of underdevelopment, discrimination, and the neglect of Arab society, and that in order to uproot crime there is a need to eliminate gaps in various fields. The present plan, led by Public Security Minister Omer Ben-Lev and integrated with the socioeconomic five year plan, reflects this vision and draws it closer to becoming a reality.
We have a lot to say about this Government Decision and we will discuss it in greater detail at a later stage. For now, here are five short comments about the government’s plan to uproot violence:
1/ Immediate Response
A key component of the Government Decision is an “emergency operation” for a period of just six months, intended to stabilize the situation and prevent further deterioration. Under Deputy Public Security Minister Yoav Segelovich, teams from various relevant governmental bodies will be activated. These will include a tax team to combat the phenomenon of fictitious invoices; a banking team to address economic aspects and black market loans; a team in the field of firearms; a team examining tenders in the local authorities; a team to combat crime in Bedouin society; a team to monitor and resolve conflicts; a legislation team, and so forth.
2/ Response to Root Social Causes
The plan to uproot violence includes a close interface with the five-year plan for socioeconomic development. Of the NIS 32 billion the government is allocating for earmarked actions in Arab society, NIS 2.4 billion will be allocated for direct actions to address crime and violence and closely-related issues. The remainder is earmarked for investment in development in Arab communities and for the development of Arab society in all aspects and fields, constituting a five-year plan on an unprecedented scale. Among other items, NIS 9.5 billion will be invested in education; NIS 3.7 billion in transportation; NIS 3.5 billion in housing and planning; NIS 1.5 billion in employment, etc. This integrated investment in such a wide range of areas increases the chance of true change in Arab society, which will also be reflected in the uprooting of violence.
3/ Partnership with Arab Society
The plan was developed in cooperation with numerous players from within Arab society, including the political leadership, the Committee of Heads of Local Authorities, and civil society organizations. We at the Abraham Initiatives accompanied the plan from start to finish and are continuing to work closely with all echelons as the plan moves on to the implementation phase.
4/ Practical Results
What matters in this plan is the practical results it will produce. However, it is unrealistic to expect a rapid fall in the number of murder victims. The plan aims to cut the number of murders by 10% by the end of 2022, and to achieve a 10% increase in the number of serious violence cases that are solved by the police. This would be a good start, but it is far from adequate. What matters most now is to stop the downward trend in personal security.
5/ What is Still Missing?
The plan certainly has its problems. These range from problems in policing methods to the lack of solutions for the shortage of loans and credit for Arab citizens in order to reduce their reliance on gray-market loans. Much work remains to be done. We will continue to help all the governmental bodies to optimize their working methods, and we will monitor the implementation of the plan. Because Arab lives matter.
