As I got older and became more of a go-getter, I matured—not just as a person but also as a professional. I became determined to demonstrate my commitment and dedication. I would often work late or push myself beyond my limits, even when I was sick. A few times, a coworker would tell me that I was doing too much and that I wasn’t pouring the same energy into taking care of myself.
I remember when I earned my degree and received an educational certificate. I was supposed to get a pay raise from the same workplace, but when I asked why the increase was so minimal, they explained it was due to a lack of experience ($15.70 to $15.97). I was baffled because the person who had interviewed me initially said they wouldn’t hire me unless I had the necessary experience, which I had.
It was in that moment that I realized how easy it is for a company to use you and drain your energy because you're beneficial to them. But they don’t value you enough to see your worth or compensate you accordingly.
Therefore, I made the decision to leave and pursue opportunities where I could be appreciated, where my skills and efforts would be recognized and properly rewarded.
So, to my dear empowered professional women, I want to remind you that your worth is not defined by how much you give to others, nor is it determined by the space you occupy in an organization that fails to recognize your value. You are not here to be overworked, underappreciated, or undervalued. Your contributions are invaluable, and it’s time to demand the respect, recognition, and compensation that reflects your true potential.
Don’t let anyone dictate your worth or limit your growth because of your background, your identity, or the color of your skin. Know that you are deserving of the highest opportunities and the highest rewards. Your growth—professionally and personally—is just as important as the work you put in. Prioritize your mental well-being, because a healthy mind and spirit are essential for sustained success.
It’s okay to step back, reassess, and choose a path where your brilliance shines and is celebrated. Don’t settle for environments that drain you, and don’t allow yourself to be in spaces that don't support your growth or mental peace. Keep pushing, keep advocating for yourself, and never settle for anything less than what you deserve. Your journey is yours to shape, and you have the power to create a future that is fulfilling, empowering, and rewarding. Your well-being, both mentally and emotionally, should always be a priority.
