Our photo essay, "After the U.S. Midterms, Where Do Women Stand?" is live now! Click below to check it out.

"Voting is just the start. Voting is the basic thing that we should be doing. Yesterday, seeing those results was depressing, but hopefully in the grand scheme of things, when somebody’s looking back, they’re gonna see the effort we put in." (Essay by Jae Thomas and Brianna Zimmerman, graphic by Jae, Brianna, and Hailey Nuthals)

After the U.S. Midterms, Where Do Women Stand?

"I feel empowered. I feel everyone came together and was able to do something. More people voted, or signed up to vote ... than almost the last three elections, and I think that’s an amazing thing. The fact that your voice can be heard and you have the power. It’s such a big moment in history."

The statistics on gender representation in Congress are still far from 50:50, but notable gains were still made for women’s representation. What will that mean for their empowerment?

A Look Into the Evidence That 'Lone Wolf' Terrorists Are a Pack

It's easy to see this report and scoff that it's obvious, but the data presented here is crucial in understanding that there are patterns, which means these are not aberrations, not individual moments. "Lone wolf" attackers might not be members of violent organizations, but they are members of violent communities, and should be addressed as such.

Studies find that many of them connect with like-minded believers online and broadcast their ideology and intentions before they act.

There Is No Guide to Being Biracial

"The only aspects of Asian culture I really knew were the stereotypes I heard from my family and school friends. Those stereotypes became the core part of my identity for most of my teen years."

I’m now at a stepping stone in my life where I have to decide if constructing my own version of my culture … is enough for me to claim the race.

Landlords are threatening rent hikes if Proposition 10 passes, activists say

Today in "ways that power is abused" and "ways that land/housing is wielded as power:"

"When coupled with increases in rent, he argues, political messages like these constitute 'voter intimidation.' ... 'It undermines the whole electoral process,' says Gross."

The ballot measure would roll back state regulations on rent control.

Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay, everyone. Remember, no person can be illegal, and definitely not on stolen land.

For Alienation content on the matter, watch for our upcoming look into the current state of the Taíno people — coincidentally, the first people Christopher Columbus would colonize in the Americas.

Welcome to Native Land. This is a resource for North Americans (and others) to find out more about local Indigenous territories and languages.

Rally for Our Neighborhoods!

Right now, Alienation is digging into the story behind the redevelopment of the 80 Flatbush site in Brooklyn. We will be attending this rally, and we invite you to come along! (If you've got other plans, don't worry - our story on the matter is coming soon!)

Human-scale NYC and over 50 co-sponsoring organizations are hosting a big tent rally to protest overdevelopment and big real estate’s undue influence on our elected officials. Our neighborhoods are being ripped apart with bad zoning that displaces residents and small businesses and ignores the env...

The Government Fee That Can Cost Poor Philadelphians Their Inheritance

There's more than one way to skin a cat, and more than one way to cheat the working class out of their property, inheritances, and wealth. In advance of this week's Critical Reading event (Thursday, be there or be square!), see this article on probate fees, and how the government saying "sorry, not my job" isn't enough:

Homeownership is sold as the pathway to wealth. But what if it costs too much to keep the wealth your family has earned?

Hey, Army Corps of Engineers—Show Us Your Work in Your DAPL Report

Some inspiration for tonight's Critical Reading event (7pm, Central Brooklyn Library, be there!):

"'A federal judge declared the [Dakota Access Pipeline] permits to be illegal, and ordered the Corps to take a fresh look at the risks of an oil spill and the impacts to the Tribe and its Treaty rights ... That is not what the Army Corps did. Instead, we got a cynical and one-sided document designed to paper over mistakes, not address the Tribe’s legitimate concerns.'”

Despite a court order to reassess the Dakota Access Pipeline’s environmental impact, the agency won’t share the results of its new study.

Marginalized Identities Are Not Enough to Save Us

After a lot of tinkering with the website and quite a bit of catching up with our day jobs, Alienation is back to the task of making content for you all! Today, see Natasha Roy teach us a critical lesson on uncritically supporting identity politics. Coming up, see a new writer's reflection on conflicting identities and microaggressions!

(Yes, we do a lot of identity analysis here. The public begins with the personal!)

Trump and Friends Cash In

A reminder about our Critical Reading event two weeks from now — the series aims to hold journalists, publications, and readers accountable for the information they share and consume. The first installment focuses on coverage of a North Carolina gas pipeline, but it's all too relevant to the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Click below for recent news on the topic, and don't forget to RSVP for our event!

Members and backers of the Trump administration are profiting from DAPL while scheming to make even bigger bucks shipping oil and petrochemicals overseas.

Internet Access May Be the Biggest Hurdle to Medicaid Coverage for Many Arkansans

Means-testing — determining whether an individual is qualified for aid based on whether or not they have the means to help themselves — is, in every situation, detrimental to those who most need aid.

The state government has started to institute work requirements for its medicaid program that includes logging work hours online, but broadband coverage in the state is sparse—at best.

If you worked for your high school newspaper / lit mag, Alienation is collecting stories & experiences to be published in our upcoming back-to-school issue! We are looking for any reflections — positive, negative, nostalgic — as well as thoughts on how [your high school's] journalism has changed since you were a student.

Please comment/message me for more info! We're looking to gather as many submissions as possible.

(Alienation is as of yet an independent project with no budget; we unfortunately do not compensate contributors at this time.)

When many Americans think about President Lincoln, we tend to think about log cabins, top hats, and the Emancipation Proclamation. However, Lincoln’s crimes against humanity, such as the execution …

New York City Housing Authority, Accused of Endangering Residents, Agrees to Oversight

On Thursday, Alienation will be covering live the march against the #CuomoHousingCrisis — in advance, see the NYT coverage of just how bad it is.

"...problems were literally covered up. Staff members would “build false walls out of a single layer of plywood to conceal dilapidated rooms” from inspectors, the complaint said.

So ingrained was the approach that for more than a decade, Nycha gave staff members a “list of ‘Quick Fix Tips’ that served as a how-to manual for misleading inspectors,” the complaint noted."

Prosecutors also said Nycha covered up its actions, including lying about lead paint in its buildings, potentially poisoning more children than previously believed.

LIES Journal

If you’re looking for some in-depth Marxist analysis this issue of Historical Materialism is more than enough to keep you busy for a while. Identity politics is often a hot-button term, and it’s frequently hard to find a measured, calm discussion of their role in the left.

Of interest: Special open-access issue of Historical Materialism on "Identity Politics"

- includes critique of feminism-as-crime-control (or carceral feminism), a Fanon and Biko influenced critique of Afro-Pessimism, and more. Potentially some interesting tensions or confluences with writing that's been published in LIES. What do you think?...

Race, Class, and Voice: Boots Riley’s Debut Shows Up and Speaks Out

“The most impactful and disturbing thing about this film is its fearless interrogation of our institutions of power. Even with the wild visuals and snippets of performance art, and the exposition and the plot are firmly grounded in the reality of modern Oakland, of a city struggling with growing inequality and injustice. It’s both a love letter to Oakland and a funhouse mirror, pushing and prodding at its darkest corners.”
