The Benz Patent-Motorwagen (1886)

Karl Benz is widely credited with inventing the first true modern automobile. Unlike earlier attempts that were essentially horse carriages with engines bolted on, Benz designed this vehicle from the ground up as a motorized unit.

Three Wheels, Not Four: The original 1886 model was a three-wheeled vehicle because Benz wasn’t satisfied with the steering systems available for four wheels at the time.

The Powerplant: It featured a rear-mounted, single-cylinder four-stroke engine. It produced roughly 0.75 horsepower and had a top speed of about 16 km/h (10 mph).
The World's First "Road Trip": Karl’s wife, Bertha Benz, took the car on its first long-distance journey (about 105 km or 65 miles) without telling him. She even had to stop at a pharmacy to buy ligroin (a cleaning solvent) to use as fuel, making that pharmacy the first "gas station" in history.
