As you’ve probably noticed, grocery bills are at an all time high.
That’s one reason I was so glad to speak recently at the California WIC Association conference on a topic that feels especially timely: budget-friendly prenatal nutrition.
I know it can feel like “optimal” pregnancy nutrition isn’t possible on a budget, but that’s not always the case.
Eating well during pregnancy does not have to mean buying specialty products, expensive powders, or a cart full of “superfoods.” Some of the most nutrient-dense foods for pregnancy are humble, affordable staples — the kind that can stretch across multiple meals, support steady blood sugar, and provide the nutrients that matter most for a growing baby.
A lot of you may not know this, but earlier in my career, my work was primarily with low income pregnant women, who frequently faced food insecurity and imperfect food options/accessibility. Food assistance programs were certainly a big part of the picture and we also worked together on affordable, nutritious meal ideas incorporating foods they purchased.
Everyone’s circumstances are different, and the most helpful strategies are the ones that actually fit your real life.
I walk through a variety of options so you can choose the ideas that make the most sense for your household in my article "Budget-Friendly Prenatal Nutrition."
It covers tips for purchasing/sourcing, planning meals, cooking, reducing food waste, and how to get the most out of food assistance programs (if this applies to you).
Reply BUDGETBLOG to read it (or search my site the old fashioned way).
Again, let me reassure you: There are ways to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need to thrive during pregnancy without spending a fortune!
