NOLA after the MAAFA ceremony that happened in Congo Square. This picture was taken on the side of a church. The wonderful woman in the picture sang such a beautiful song to honor our ancestors and it was the first and only time I ever caught what is considered, the Holy Ghost.

The interesting part of this photo is, I’m reacting so naturally to this moment while taking the picture, I couldn’t see the actual photograph I was taking because I was crying, so I didn’t know if the image was in focus. Two elders put a cold water bottle on my neck and a hand on my arm which helped to calm whatever was happening. One of many reasons I love and gravitate to New Orleans. 📸: Em St. James

Yes, I love the city of New Orleans like we dated in high school, like my bred retro 1 J’s or like a crispy pizza slice that’s not burnt at the bottom.

This picture is from the second line that took place after the funeral of Uncle Lionel Batiste, a very much loved and known local drummer from New Orleans.

I was in Philly checking out an art exhibit and I met so many great artist, it was one of my favorite art trips. This picture reminds me of the time I had but most of all it’s a reminder that when you approach people with a genuinely kind spirit, you disarm them. I ALWAYS ASK to take a photo because people let down their armor momentarily and share themselves with you and I love that. These guys were taking out trash from a restaurant and they stopped, smiled, posed and said, “thank you.” Shout out to Philly! Em St. James

For episode 6 I discuss a tweet I read from another that asked a list of what I found to be and overtly male-identified questions that was supposed to chastise, vilify and ultimately shame women into not being the cookie cutter example of . I WILL NEVER SUPPORT THAT MESSAGE.

The vilification and mockery of black women for profit and acceptance has become problematic to the point that other women feel obligated to join this unwarranted display of disdain and ridicule. If you want to join the discussion head over to my YouTube channel (Link in bio) and let's chat. Or talk to me in the comments here but, let's have a conversation.

This photo was taken when I was working in New Orlean in the Lower 9th Ward. These two sweet girls waited for the neighborhood pool to open. This was the day I got lost walking around during 103 degree weather, but when it was high noonish, it was a wrap for me. 📸: Em St. James

This was taken in Brownsville, Brooklyn and the kids let me shadow them for about an hour. I said “pretend like I’m not here” and, they did. They were really funny kids and checked around every so often to see if I took pictures of the moments they thought were photo-worthy. Shout out to those boys in the park that allowed me into their space!

Taken downtown Newark. Hard to miss a shirtless guy in a mask (pre COVID) with a skate board. He was super cool. Let me follow him around for a bit, but when I met up with him to share the images - he didn’t care for them. It was the first time someone had ever said that, but I smiled and said : maybe I’m not your brand of photographer…he showed me what he liked and I respected his opinion . Couldn’t be mad at his visual style.

For Ep. 2 of No NRTV being released tomorrow. I pose this question: Is Black Women Ruining Black Families With Feminism? The short answer is NO, but I wouldn’t feel so strongly advocating for black feminism if it wasn’t for bell hooks. THANK YOU for advocating for me. R.I.P. •

They sat in Lincoln Park having a conversation and I said: Heyyyy, wow I love the green you’re wearing, She smiled said thank you and asked about my camera. I almost regret not having color film in the camera. They were so nice and gracious and gave so much history about the black community in Jersey City. I still have her number and hope to talk to her soon. They were a wealth of information. Her name is Yahsana and that’s her brother.
