Biography of Majek Fashek
Majekodunmi Fasheke , popularly known as Majek Fashek (pronounced as Ma-je-ko-dun-mi Ifa-kii-she-eke ), was a Nigerian singer-songwriter and guitarist.
He was best known in his home country for the 1988 album
Prisoner of Conscience , which included the multiple award-winning single "Send Down the Rain".
Also known as The Rainmaker , he has worked with various artists worldwide, including
Tracy Chapman, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, and Beyoncé .
Fashek was born in Benin City to an
Edo Old Bendel State mother and a Ijesha father,(Osun State, but identifies with his Benin roots.
Various translations of his name Fasheke (Ifa-kii-she-eke) include "high priest who does not lie", "powers of miracles" and "(system or medium of) divination does not lie"
After his parents separated Fashek remained in Benin City with his mother, and soon joined the choir in his local Aladura church and learned to play the trumpet and guitar whilst composing songs for the choir.
In the early eighties Fashek, who at the time went by the stage name Rajesh Kanal, joined the group Jastix with McRoy Gregg, and Drummer Black 'Rice. They were best known as the in-house band on the show Music Panorama on NTA Benin , and toured with fellow reggae group The Mandators .
Jastix were also session musicians for upcoming reggae singer Edi Rasta, who would later be known as Evi-Edna Ogholi .
1988–1990: Prisoner of Conscience and I&I Experience
In 1988, shortly after Jastix disbanded Fashek, who now used the name Majek Fashek, signed with Tabansi Records and began a solo career by releasing the album Prisoner of Conscience and quickly became Nigeria's top reggae artist after the song " Send Down The Rain" became the most popular song of the year, and in 1989 he won six PMAN awards for "Song of the Year", "Album of the Year", and "Reggae Artist of the Year" among others.
Fashek's next album was I&I Experience which was released in late 1989 under the Tabansi Label.
1991: So Long Too Long and American invasion
After leaving Tabansi Records, he was signed to CBS Nigeria in the early 1990s and released So Long Too Long . It was included on Putumayo World Music 's first album. In 1990 he was signed to Interscope Records and released the critically acclaimed album
Spirit Of Love, produced by "Little Steven" Van Zandt . In 1992, he appeared on Late Night with David Letterman in support of his new 1991 album, and performed the song "So Long Too Long" for the television audience.
Flame Tree released The Best of Majek Fashek in 1994. He was later dropped by Interscope before moving to Mango, a division of Island Records , as it was more accustomed to marketing reggae internationally. His first album for the company included a cover version of Bob Marley 's "Redemption Song". He has recorded several albums for various labels since, including
Rainmaker for Tuff Gong (1997) and
Little Patience for Coral (2004).
Musical style
Fashek's musical influences include Bob Marley – whom he resembles vocally – Jimi Hendrix, and
Fela Kuti . He was one of the original Nigerian artists to be drawn to the music of the Caribbean, specifically reggae, rather than indigenous hybrids such as fuji , jùjú , but has been known to mix these genres into his own style which he calls kpangolo , and the song "My Guitar", an ode to his favourite instrument, was also heavily influenced by rock
Fashek played a supporting role in the 2000 Nollywood movie Mark of the Beast ,and starred in a commercial for non-alcoholic beverage Diamalt. He recently (2016) performed in a comedy show (with more than ten thousand audience in attendance) in Lagos, Nigeria, with a roundly power-filled and soul-lifting performance.
In December 2016 Fashek contributed the song "We Are Not Afraid" to a video featuring 200 celebrities to raise funds for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Human Rights Watch (HRW).
Fashek was married to Rita Fashek who inspired the song "Without You"; the couple had four children together, but have since divorced. In 2015, it was revealed that Fashek was bankrupt and battling drug addiction. After admitting that he needed help, he was admitted into a drug rehabilitation centre in Abuja,[20] but has since recovered, and returned to music.
Besides his struggle with drug addiction, other health conditions required his hospitalization on several occasions. He was rumored dead in September 2019 but his manager quelled the rumors, confirming that Majek had indeed been critically ill, hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, England, and in dire need of financial assistance.
Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Femi Otedola has pledged to cover all the singer's medical expenses.
He died on the 1st of June, 2020 at 71 in the United States, after battling an unknown illness. His death was confirmed by his manager Omenka Uzoma, on the late singer’s official Instagram handle.

But in small towns throughout the Andes, this scene is played out daily – except the police are never called. Guinea pig, or cuy as it is known, is a delicacy. When properly prepared, the meat of a guinea pig is rich, fatty, and flavorful, while the skin, when roasted over a hot fire, gives pork crackling a run for its money. Although the practice of eating guinea pig seems peculiar to many Americans, enterprising entrepreneurs attempted to bring the meat to the American market back in the 1920s. They called it cavy, a word used to describe any South American, short-tailed member of the family Caviidae. According to Dr. J.A. Roberts, cavy was found in some restaurants throughout Europe. His book, Profit in Guinea Pigs, even provided several recipes for the home cook. He argued that guinea pigs were easy and inexpensive to raise. The

Rev. Emeka Merenu an Anglican priest in Imo State was gruesomely murdered on Tuesday, by gunmen believed to be members of the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
Merenu, the priest in charge of St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Ihitte-Ikwa, in the Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, was shot and stabbed to death in the early hours of Tuesday.
The gunmen, suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) drove into the church compound and they killed the priest and set his car ablaze, and the assailants sprayed bullets in the air as they sped away, says by witnesses.
It was being speculated that the priest was killed because he allowed students to sit for their WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examinations) at his parish school on Monday.
The speculation was being reinforced by a statement in July, credited to IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, in which he accused the Archbishop of Enugu, the Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma of betraying the Biafran people.
The separatist group said the archbishop and powerful businessmen and traditional Igbo leaders had betrayed the cause of independence by their support of the Federal government.
The archbishop later denied his involvement in the abduction of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu in Kenya.

Femi Gbajabiamila the speaker of the House of Representatives says he has no plan to unseat Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as he is doing well and deserved a second term ticket.
Gbajabiamila said in an interview on Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu has been doing “good job” in governing Lagos, stressing that the governor must not be distracted on the assignment.
He continue by saying that Sanwo-Olu be allowed to renew his mandate in the next general election, because his performance in the last two years has surpassed expectations.
Gbajabiamila also cleared the air on his rumoured ambition to contest for the Lagos’ governorship seat in 2023, saying he had “no immediate plan” to contest. He said the task before him as Number four citizen in the country was enormous and tough enough for him to be distracted by the rumour.
Asked if he is nursing a governorship ambition, Gbajabiamila said: “That (question) provokes a smile. No, I don’t have any such plan and I don’t have immediate plan. I have a job I am doing right now; it’s a very tough job. Sometimes, it’s the most difficult job and I say it to people in the world. People don’t understand that, but this is not a forum I’m going to break it down.
“I don’t want distractions. I am working as a Speaker of the House of Representatives with a lot of responsibilities on my shoulder right now. Any other thing would be a distraction.
Oloruntoba Ifeoluwa reporting
There’s no place like home o! It’s beautiful when I hear people discovering the riches and beauty that lies within Nigeria’s rich culture – one being the Osun-Osogbo Festival. Osun-Osogbo is considered as the biggest annual religious event among the Yoruba people. The event attracts spectators and worshippers from all over the world in the month of August every year.
Osun is a goddess of all things feminine; fertility, spirituality, emotions, sensuality, nurture and love.
The festival began approximately 600 years ago. It was started by the founders of the Osogbo community.
The story told is that the founders intended to clear all the trees in the area for settlement.
As soon as they began felling the trees, a spirit from the river-god Osun ordered them away. Immediately the place turned to be a sacred place of worship for the devotees. Osun – is often represented as a picturesque woman dressed in white or yellow – boasting a beautiful smile but truly broken-hearted.
During the festival, people appease the goddess daily for two weeks with different performances which include playing the drums, singing, and dancing. During the singing and dancing, the people show off their costumes.
A sacred forest located in the outskirts of Osogbo is believed to be one of the forests where "Orisha", the spirit they believe blesses them, reveals itself.
Devotees are led by a virgin maiden called Arugba who is a link between the community and deity. The virgin maiden leads in all sacrifices offered in the river.
The Arugba (virgin maiden) carries all the sacrifices (flowers, honey, gold etc) of the community and for all those in attendance. The tradition dictates that these sacrifices be carried in a big calabash.
Before all this happens, the worshippers offer a special prayer in the shrine of a priestess.
The Osun-Osogbo Festival is international. It attracts foreigners who see it as a cultural and religious connection
In the 1950's, Ms Wenger, an Austrian born artist and activist, divorced her husband on arriving in Nigeria. She decided to stay in the Osogbo for the rest of her life until she died in 2009. At that time, she was 93.
The festival started gaining popularity in the 1980's with Ms Wenger at the leading line with activist activities. She was then nicknamed Adunni Olorisha. In 2003, UNESCO recognised 67 acres of virgin forest that was remaining as a world heritage...
This is a great opportunity for you all to come and give offering to Osun and to also show gratitude to for the goodness receiced.
We felicitate with every traditionalists and indigenous people of Yoruba! Oore Yeeye ooo!

Amen...
