Capitol Records in Hollywood was the worlds first circular, earthquake proof office building built in the world. And did you know that a blinking light at the top of the Tower spells out
H O L L Y W O O D in Morse code? Yup! It’s done so every night since the building was erected. In fact, Leila Morse, Samuel Morse’ granddaughter flipped the beacon switch for the first time in 1956. There was also a free WATS telephone service inside that every employee, engineer and recording artist could use to call anyone in the world. That was a huge perk back in the day.

But that blinking light isn’t Capitol’s only topper... a vintage Christmas tree, (designed by Ollsen Lighting featuring 4,373 bulbs) has been lighting up the Hollywood skyline each December since 1958, except for 1973, when L.A. experienced an energy crisis.

Universal now owns the label and most of the original staff is gone, but Studio A, B & C, are still used. There’s even an echo chamber 30 feet below the parking lot. The sound of those chambers is on thousands of hit records, from Ray Charles to The Beach Boys.

Let’s hope the Tower, (which resembles a needle on a stack of records designed by Welton Beckett), will always remain as a recording studio and never converts into condos.

And yes, I’m wearing my dad’s vintage Capitol Records jacket he used to wear in the 70s. I wore it on the day I was invited to flip the switch on the Christmas tree in 2015. Dad recorded 18 records in Studio A & B. He deserved a jacket.

The Capitol Tower is one of the main reasons I created this page. There is so much history here. It’s Hollywood “Tower of Pisa”! It even appears to be leaning in this photo!

65 years ago today in 1956, the world’s first circular office building & “new landmark in the entertainment world,” the Capitol Tower opened its doors! The 150-foot-high building was the tallest allowed in earthquake-prone Los Angeles. The Tower studios (A & 😎 have been creating #GoodVibrations ever since.

Trivia: A red light atop the building spells out the word "Hollywood" in Morse code every few seconds.
