When Fran Ursini opened Newport Rib Company in 1984, he wasn’t just building a restaurant—he was building something much bigger: a place where family, youth, and community came together.

From his early days running burger stands near the Newport Pier to launching one of Costa Mesa’s most iconic BBQ spots, Fran created a space that offered more than just a meal. It was a proving ground for local teens learning work ethic, a family-run business rooted in love, and a hub where neighbors supported one another.

Fran’s leadership extended far beyond the kitchen—serving on nonprofit boards, founding local associations, and coaching and refereeing sports for decades. His philosophy was simple but powerful: lead with kindness, work hard, and never waste a napkin.

His impact on the community is unforgettable—and the spirit he infused into Newport Rib Company still lives on with every plate served and every neighbor greeted like family.
