Good evening, good people.
My name is Quincy Byrd—City of Hampton Social Services Local Advisor, community leader, caregiver, business owner, and proud American citizen.
But tonight, I’m speaking as a man who’s been ten toes down, boots on the ground, fighting a system that still holds the keys to my future.
I did 10 years. Came home with my GED, certifications, and a mission. My rights were restored in 2016.
I can vote. I can run for office. But I can’t work for Uber? Can’t rent an apartment with a 625 credit score and Section 8 voucher?
Can’t even get paid to take care of my mama—after she had two strokes—because of a background check?
That ain’t justice. That’s a setup.
Barrier crime statutes and unchecked background checks keep people like me locked out—even when we’ve done everything right.
There is no rehabilitation without reintegration.
If I’m good enough to advise my city, I’m damn sure good enough to work and provide.
So don’t just clap for me—stand with me.
Hire us. House us. Trust us.
Because freedom without opportunity is just another form of captivity.
Let’s go—ten toes down, boots on the ground, step by step—until redemption ain’t just a word… it’s a way of life.
