Hi everyone — this post is a little different from what I usually share, but it’s something deeply important to me.
People often ask how I’ve stayed so strong through my brain tumor diagnosis, brain surgery, facial paralysis, and most recently, the surgery to restore my smile. The truth is that, as difficult as those experiences have been, I’ve lived through something even harder. Sixteen years ago today, my mother died by su***de, and I have never been the same. She was the most beautiful, loving mother a daughter could ever dream of. Unfortunately, mental illness took her from me when I was 28.
This time of year can be especially difficult for so many people who are struggling with their mental health. Please be kind to yourself and gentle with others. Reach out if someone crosses your mind. And if you suddenly hear from someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time, check in with them emotionally. Before my mom passed, she called many people she hadn’t spoken to in years — they were her quiet goodbyes.
If you’re worried about a loved one, please ask them directly if they’re feeling suicidal. Asking does not increase the risk — it actually opens a door that can help keep them safe.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please call 988 for mental health emergencies or immediate emotional support when there is not an imminent physical danger.
If there is an emergency involving immediate danger, a threat to life, serious medical issues, or a mental health crisis with an immediate risk of harm, please call 911.
Take care of yourselves and each other. 💛
