Abstract:
The American middle-class is considered the backbone of American society, and more importantly, it is considered the backbone of the American economy. It is a class essentially composed of full-time professionals with college and advanced degrees, trade workers, and small business owners. For a very long time, the American middle-class was arguably the wealthiest middle-class in the world due to a strong purchasing power.
However, over the years, as wealth inequality increased significantly, the American middle-class started to dwindle. And the main reason for the decline and slow death of the American middle-class is crony capitalism—an economic system in which big corporations and government officials mutually benefit from each other by restricting competition and certain aspects of the private sector that impede social mobility. The purpose of this book is then to explain and demonstrate how crony capitalism engineered the slow death of the middle-class and killed the American Dream in the process.
