Coach Ian Rosario - The GACS Intern Experience

I’ve just wrapped up my 8th week as an intern with GACS. This has been an extremely rewarding and eye opening experience for me. Firstly, I want to say that I am constantly impressed with the sophistication of the strength and conditioning program, as well as the support they receive from the entire school.

This is actually my first ever coaching position. I was very unsure of myself and my ability to lead a group of athletes before I started this internship. However, everyone, especially the students, have been very welcoming, which has made this transition much easier. GAC provides an environment that makes me excited to come to school everyday. They have also provided me with much more knowledge and insight than I have received in a traditionally classroom setting.

From a coaching standpoint, I’ve learned that this field goes way beyond just coaching technique and programming. Making personal connections with your athletes is critical. I’ve found that when athletes see that you’re invested in them and their success beyond the weight room, they become more invested in your program and more receiving to your coaching. Being a reserved person, this perhaps might be the hardest part for me so far. As I begin to open up more and more, I find the coaching aspect to come easier and also I am better received by the athletes.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the semester and to see how I grow as a coach. I already know that this experience is going to positively influence the rest of my coaching career.

It has been great getting back into the swing of things at GAC after being at my surgery rotation for the past two weeks. It is great to see the level of progress the girls’ classes have had in this short amount of time. I also loved learning the dynamics behind Coach Schofield’s speed and agility program. Something as simple as six ladder drills was unpacked to reveal that there are two drills correlating to each plane of movement. That makes so much sense, but I never thought of it before. All in all, great to be back and I’m excited to continue learning.

Determining Performance Testing

Coaches are faced with many questions when determining performance testing for their athletes. What physical attributes increase the likelihood of success in their sport? What exercises correlate to improving their performance? Will my athletes solely be chasing numbers and increase their risk of injury?

Every sport is different, and I know there are a million different scenarios involved in answering these questions. Because this is true, I believe it adds to the importance of selecting appropriate tests for our athletes at specific times during the year. Testing can be a simple tool in determining the readiness of our athletes both in-season and off-season. Knowing where we want our athletes to be at specific times of the year allows us to narrow the focus of our training program and assist in evaluating the progress of our athletes. Typically, a stronger and faster athlete is a better athlete. However, understanding that every test does not have to be a 1RM can help us to broaden our minds on how we test our athletes.

“Speed will follow when the mechanism of the movements is more assured.” – Rafael Sabatini

First, congratulations to both the girls and boys basketball teams for making it to the State Semi-Final! All the athletes have been training extremely hard this semester and it’s been awesome working with everyone here at GACS. The past few weeks we’ve started to dive into the many different aspects involved in program design. It has really helped to connect some of the training pieces that I’ve seen over the last couple of months. This has allowed me to better understand how specific exercises and drills are able to build on one another to achieve desired goals.

One of the most impactful things I will take away from this internship is the emphasis on a growth mindset. Continuing to learn throughout your career by seeking out new information and engaging in conversation with other coaches will greatly influence your ability to improve as a coach.

Meeting with Michael Edward Bewley this week was incredibly insightful. Just seeing how educated and totally immersed he is in his sport is inspiring. Like we have been talking about in the past weeks, Bewley emphasized how crucial gaining the trust of the athletes is before training them. Then he went into training sport-specific, but the level of detail put into his sport-specific training is unlike anything I've seen. I can really understand now that training for the types of movements of a sport is just as important as training for the skills of a sport. I also really enjoyed the dynamic and seeing the numbers in how to measure fitness through heart rate recovery. All around, this talk got me thinking and left me curious for more.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been able to engage in some amazing discussions with two very well known and highly respected performance coaches. We are very appreciative of Brett Bartholomew and Jeremy Boone for taking time out of their hectic schedules to speak with us and answer questions as we begin our coaching careers. Coach Bartholomew is most recently known for his book, “Conscious Coaching”, and website artofcoaching.com. Coach Boone is the host of the iTunes podcast Coach Your Best, and he is the founder of Athlete By Design.

Both coaches have worked with a wide variety of athletes and individuals at many different levels of sports performance. It was great to hear about their coaching experiences and what they felt are critical characteristics to a successful coaching career. One of the major recurring themes was continuously striving to develop a bond and trusting relationship with your athletes. This reminds me of a familiar saying in the military, “a perfect plan executed poorly is worse than an average plan executed perfectly”. I think this is fitting when developing an exercise program for your athletes. Creating buy-in by showing your athletes that you truly have their best interest at heart will break down barriers and allow them to trust the process. Without that connection between you and your athletes it will be challenging for your athletes to execute the plan to their full potential.

It has been a great learning experience here at GACS, and thanks again to Brett Bartholomew, Jeremy Boone, Gary Schofield, and Richard Burnett, for helping us develop our mission, vision, and coaching identity!

Week 3 is in the books and Im loving every minute of it. This week was focused around some of the pitfalls of coaching as well as the tools to avoid them. The first word that comes to mind is "Connect". Building a connection with "the person" as well as "the player" is a theme Ive seen elevate team chemistry as well as quality of life for athletes young and old. I wish I had more time to pick the brain ofJeremy Boone but in the short time we spoke he shot to the top of my admiration list as a guy who has embraced the psychology of an athlete as well as the science of making them better. The excitement and nastalgia of where these young athletes are in their lives makes connecting with them perhaps my primary goal while on campus. Make no mistake whether on a highschool campus or a fitness gym setting we are shaping and changing lives.

Intern Experience - Tia Juliano

This week at GAC was filled with valuable lessons across the board. I had an interesting conversation with Coach B about the shift away from just looking at vertical height to now looking at the power aspect and time in-between consecutive jumps. We also had the great opportunity to speak to and learn from Jeremy Boone today. His message, unknowingly, echoed what Coach Schofield has spoken to us about the day before. The big take away was separating who you are from what you do. While you must be able to do this for yourself, it becomes a huge part of your job, especially when coaching younger athletes. I can relate to this because I experienced the depression once my elite volleyball career was ended by my shoulder injury. Throughout my time studying athletic training, my mission was to keep athletes in the game so yet another athlete doesn't have to lose their dream because of something preventable. I will work to edit this with my career focus being shifted away from athletic training, but that will always be near and dear to my heart.

Coach Michael Chau - The GACS Intern Experience (Part 1)

With the great opportunities worked with Coach Schofield, Coach Burnett and different coaching staff as well as countless unforgettable moments interacting with students at GACS last semester, coming back this semester has been an incredibly awesome and warm experience. Graduating this May from the University of Georgia, this may be my last internship at this wonderful school with the greatest coaching staff I have ever worked with. Although having achieved my first goal as being a NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist last December, I know I still have a very long journey ahead. Recall my memory, comparing to around the same time last semester, I am currently having a completely different semester at GAC. Besides of my strong desire of being an all-rounded strength coach and continuous pursuit for knowledge on strength and conditioning since first day, I have grown attached to the students and coaching staff here at GAC so much that are almost my second FAMILY which motivates me to show up and releases my stress from school from time to time. As Coach Schofield once said, programming is important but art of coaching is far more important. The rationale behind coaching is not just about sport performance but also the way we coach in terms of character building, education and connections between coaches and students. I could tell this art of coaching has also influenced me in the way to build connections with coaches and students. I am grateful to have this opportunity and glad to be part of this big FAMILY!

Coach Craig Heuring – The GACS Intern Experience

I've had a great opportunity to be exposed to some of the fitness testing methods and applications here at GACS this month. I believe that combining testing strategies with desired fitness adaptations as they translate to sports performance is a critical piece when implementing training concepts and gauging the success of a workout program. We recently began this process with the GACS lacrosse team. A couple of weeks ago we conducted the beep test. The test measures aerobic power by means of a 20 meter shuttle run (down and back). This particular test is very applicable to sports that require cardiovascular endurance as well as power output, such as lacrosse and soccer. To summarize, the athlete will complete multiple 20 meter shuttle runs in a predetermined amount of time. They will repeat this process until they are unable to complete the shuttle run in the allotted time (two failed attempts). A score is given based on the number of shuttle runs completed. Below are a couple of links to more information about testing procedures and scoring.

We were able to gather baseline data on the team as whole, as well as the individual athletes, which allows for more precise implementation of training methods and evaluations. Currently we are integrating heart rate monitored training into the lacrosse team's training program that focuses on conditioning the athletes within a specific target heart rate range (see video). Having the chance to be hands-on throughout this process has been an awesome learning experience. I'm able to see these tools put to action and understand the value that it can bring to the team and coaches as they assess their readiness for competition. Go Spartans!

Coach Tia Juliano – The GACS Intern Experience (Part I)

After my first two weeks at GAC with Coach Schofield and Coach Burnett, I am excited with the possibilities and growth that will come this semester. When I was approached on whether I would like to come to GAC to intern in strength and conditioning instead of a typical athletic training rotation, I jumped at the opportunity. While I respect the knowledge and perspective athletic training has given me, I am very aware that that is not where I want my life nor career to go. I will be graduating with my degree in May and then taking over as the Facility Manager of Dawsonville Fit Body Boot Camp. Even though the work I am currently doing and will go into when I graduate will be general population, I can translate the lessons learned here to any level. In my first two weeks at GAC, it is evident that there is a culture established and respected. I appreciate the connection that both Coach Schofield and Coach Burnett have built with each and every student. One of the things I strive for is continuing education and that is so evident in this program. I'm grateful for this opportunity and will embrace it over the next few months.

Coach Craig Heuring – The GACS Intern Experience (Part I)

This is my second week interning at GACS under the mentorship of Coach Schofield and Coach Burnett. I’m a former army green beret, and I served with 5th Special Forces Group. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Georgia State University this semester and was given an excellent opportunity to learn, grow, and develop the art of coaching as I pursue a career as a high school strength and conditioning coach. In just a short period of time, it has already been an eye opening experience. I could tell immediately that the strength and conditioning department at GACS is a special place. Although the facility size, resources, and state of the art equipment play a major role in performance development, it’s the people that make GACS strength and conditioning great. The energy, trusting relationships, and respect that the student athletes and coaches have for one another makes this place come alive! I’ve had several discussions with Coach Schofield and Coach Burnett about how the skill of engaging the youth athlete and clearly communicating a message can make the difference between a good coach and a great coach. The art of coaching goes beyond the X’s and O’s of programming and gets to the heart of connecting with your athletes. This concept is what I am eager to dive into this semester, and I am grateful to have the opportunity!

The GACS Internship Experience (Part 1) - Coach Michael Chau
“Endure, put up with whatever comes your way, learn to overcome weakness and pain, push yourself to breaking point but never cave in.”

My name is Michael, from Hong Kong, an intern strength and conditioning coach at GACS this fall. I am currently a master student majoring in strength and conditioning at the University of Georgia and this is my second year in the US. Over the previous year, I had my internships at the UGA Football Team and SPARC, a private sport center in Athens, GA. Under the supervision of Lauren Higgins, former Sport Performance Coordinator at SPARC, I had learnt a lot on programming.

Having an aspiration of being an all-rounded strength and conditioning coach, came through a long way from Hong Kong, I would love to gain working/ coaching experience and learn as much as possible from different athletes, coaches and clients in different settings. From the previous internships experience, I am very thankful for being transformed from nothing into what I am today. I would love to continue my journey to fulfill my career and life goals.

Without any coaching experience with big groups of high school students and having curiosity about high school strength and conditioning program in the US, GACS is topping the list where I wanna go because of the coaching staff here, I am glad I have this opportunity to intern and work with coach Schofield and coach Burnett here in GACS.

I have been learning and seeing a lot at GACS since starting just 3 weeks ago. First of all, high school strength and conditioning program, growing up in Hong Kong where not a lot of people value exercise science, I have never seen strength and conditioning programs in any high schools, universities or even some local sports teams. Only the best of the best such as national/ professional teams would have resources for strength and conditioning, athletic training, physical therapy, etc. When I first came to GACS, I was so surprised that a high school can have these professional and systematic supports for the athletic performance and this is probably one of the reasons why US is one of the best sports countries in the world. As a strength coach, having your own training and coaching philosophies are fundamental. However, to a strength-coach-to-be, more importantly, it’s the art of coaching, it can be weight room setting, relationship building with athletes and coaches, inspirations to students-athletes, weight room atmosphere, creating a life lesson of more than just strength and conditioning, etc. All of these are fantastic experience I couldn’t learn from textbooks and I am eager to learn more. Today in a scientific and technological world, I am always excited and looking forward to know how we engage technology into strength and conditioning. Here in GACS, I am given with countless opportunities to get access to technology to not only keep tracking their athletic development but also to create innovative and fun training. Discussing with coaches on how we utilize technology into our programs is also fun and inspiring!Last but not least, coach Schofield is always challenging and directing me to think deeper and in different yet logical ways in approaching to programming. Every exercise we do in a workout should have its reason and how to progress/ regress them is the consistency to long term athletic development. I really appreciate his sequential skill development rationale. No doubt, this is one of the biggest things I have learnt so far and his knowledge as well as coaching art make my days at GACS fruitful and quality.

For the coming months at GACS, I am looking forward to be given more and more responsibilities and keep striving to further equip myself as being an all-rounded strength and coach.
