HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Darlene Love (Singer/actress, RnR Hall of Fame inductee; The Blossoms, Crystals, solo) (84)
Darlene Love, born Darlene Wright on July 26, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, is an American R&B and soul singer and actress, renowned for her powerful voice and work with producer Phil Spector. She began singing in her church choir at age 10 and joined the girl group The Blossoms in 1957 while in high school. With The Blossoms, she provided backing vocals for artists like Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, and The Ronettes, including hits like “Be My Baby” and “Monster Mash.” Love sang lead on “He’s a Rebel” (1962) and “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” (1962), credited to The Crystals, and “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” with Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, but often received no credit due to Spector’s practices. Her solo hits include “(Today I Met) The Boy I’m Gonna Marry” (1963) and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” (1963), a holiday staple performed annually on Late Show with David Letterman from 1986 to 2014.
Love faced challenges in her solo career, working as a maid in the 1980s before a comeback sparked by her holiday performances. She acted in all four Lethal Weapon films as Trish Murtaugh and performed in Broadway shows like Leader of the Pack (1985). Her 2015 album Introducing Darlene Love, produced by Steve Van Zandt, featured songs by Bruce Springsteen and Joan Jett. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, she was celebrated in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom (2013). Love won a legal battle against Spector for royalties in 1997. She continues to perform, recently collaborating with Cher on “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” for Cher’s 2023 album Christmas. Married to Alton Allison since 1984, she has three sons and lives in Rockland County, New York.
