North Adams Good News - Freeman School Class Photo.
I recently came into possession of a suitcase filled with old photographs and documents that have been tucked away in a barn in Stephentown, NY, for who knows how long. Many of these items reference North Adams, and while I plan to share more in the future, this particular photo features several recognizable local last names from the former Freeman School, which used to be located near the hospital. Judging by other dated photos, I estimate this one is from the 1910s to 1920s, although the missing corners of the frame might have contained the exact dates. One name that stands out is Ernest Bianco, who later served as a city councilor, with his brother having been the mayor; Ernest was born in 1906. Based on the looks of the ages of the individuals in the photo, I suspect it was taken around 1916. I’ve also included a list of names written at the top of the photo, and I’d love your help in identifying them. If you recognize anyone, please tag their family members and share your thoughts on the order of the names, as I’m unsure if they correspond to how they are positioned in the photo. Hair and nail salons, along with barbershops, are valuable additions to downtown areas. They attract a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. While waiting for their appointments, customers frequently browse nearby shops or enjoy a meal at local restaurants before heading home. North Adams boasts several well-regarded salons both downtown and across the city. Just yesterday, one of our team members visited Melissa's upstairs and opted for a striking new hair color, showcasing the impressive before-and-after results. A big thank you to all these businesses for their contributions to our community!

I received a painting by Morel de Tangry today, and I'm hoping to find a North Adams connection beyond just the label on the back. Did he visit or know someone, or was it simply purchased and ended up in North Adams? So far, I discovered that he was Dutch and that most of his work dates from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The label is partly missing, but I’m guessing it might have come from the Kimbell Building on Main Street, which is still standing. I'm curious if the label belonged to a private collection, a gallery, or a framing business—definitely more research to do! If anyone knows more, please share!
