Has anthropomorphism been rehabilitated? Not so long ago it was derided by certain high-minded readers as sentimental, the stuff of children’s literature. (A dubious argument, because what’s “wrong” with children’s literature?) Lately, though, it feels as if the tables have been turned. No...

It's Earth Week and LSP would like to invite you to a special event we are co-hosting with the Minnesota Farmers Union Hennepin-Ramsey County Chapter!

Join us TOMORROW (Tuesday, April 21) for a special discussion featuring Curt Meine, editor of We Can Do Better: Collected Writings on Land, Conservation, and Public Policy. The event will take place at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis (3032 Minnehaha Avenue), beginning at 7 p.m.

Curt, a highly-respected conservation historian and teacher, has written, among other books, an acclaimed biography of Aldo Leopold, who popularized the idea of the "land ethic." Curt's latest work is an edited collection of essays written by the late Paul Johnson, who was a farmer, Iowa state representative, and chief of the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service. Johnson's career highlights how a dedication to an ethic that centers people and the land can lead to the kind of public policy that brings farmers and environmentalists together. LSP and MFU care deeply about advancing policies that benefit people and the land and we're looking forward to a lively discussion about how to honor Johnson's legacy as a farmer and public servant in our shared work moving forward.

During the event, Curt will be interviewed by LSP's Brian DeVore about his book and Johnson's writings and policy work, and there will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions and join in a discussion of how we can advance public policy that contributes to a more sustainable and just food and farming system.

This is a hard loss for lots of us. Gary was a true gem. Inspirational, kind, thoughtful, generous, patient, talented. I was so grateful when he asked me to publish Moon of the Snow Blind which was the first of three graphic novels he published with me. I admired his conviction that he always knew both sides of this moment in history were not being told. Times spent talking with him up in his studio really had a magical feel.
