🥵 Overheated Holiday Weekend!
Using the 4-Factor FeelsLike
Forecast, most cities will peak between 108-114°F.
4 Factors: Temp + Humidity + Sun + Wind. Believe it or not, traditional NOAA heat index forecasts do NOT include the sun and wind. I’ve always thought they should because many folks spend so much time exposed, especially on weekends. So, I found a formula from Dr. Robert Steadman in an old research paper - a version of which is being used by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology right now. Sun spikes it. In sunny spots the sun adds up to 15°. Generally wind cools it. In Florida this time of year there’s lots of sun, but minimal wind so these numbers are 5-10° higher than NOAA’s heat index (in the shade). Bottom line: you can NOT directly compare this to our NOAA traditional heat index, and it should not be used to replace it. It does illustrate how being in the Sun makes a dramatic difference. So… shade is your friend this weekend. Be safe!!
