😊It looks like we’ll be up late tonight collecting eggs! Lily has begun excavating a nest and will spend several hours painstakingly digging before depositing her eggs. 🥚If you look closely at her eyes, you can see tears. This is common in female tortoises in the days leading up to nesting and can be a sign that egg laying is eminent.

🐢💡 What if I told you… ALL tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises?

In the reptile world, turtle is the broad term for all members of the order Testudines—which includes tortoises, aquatic turtles, and terrapins. 🌍
• Tortoises live exclusively on land, with sturdy, dome-shaped shells and elephant-like feet for walking. They do not swim.
• Turtles are primarily aquatic (like sliders and map turtles) and usually have flatter shells and webbed feet for swimming. 🌊
• Terrapins are specialized turtles that live primarily in brackish water.

So, while every tortoise is technically a turtle, not every turtle is a tortoise. 🐢✨ Next time someone mixes them up, you’ll know the difference!
