🐍 A little change of pace from the usual turtles and tortoises… 🌲

Here are a few timber rattlesnakes we encountered while exploring the Missouri outdoors. Several of these snakes briefly coiled in a defensive posture before slowly moving off once they had space — including one retreating into a nearby rock pile.

Interestingly, timber rattlesnakes often do the exact opposite of what many people expect. Their first line of defense usually isn’t standing their ground — it’s remaining perfectly still and relying on camouflage to avoid detection. In many cases, people walk right past them without ever realizing a snake was there.

Encountering a timber rattlesnake in the wild is something you never really forget.

🌵 Throwback Thursday — Mojave Desert Edition 🐢☀️

Throwing it back to an unforgettable day in the Mojave Desert. It’s always incredible to see desert tortoises out actively exploring their habitat surrounded by rocky terrain, creosote bushes, and endless desert landscape. The chuckwalla was just as impressive — boldly basking out in the open and showing off some incredible color. 🦎

Photos like these are a great reminder that even some of the harshest landscapes in North America are full of life perfectly adapted to survive there.

🐢 Wait… THAT sound?!

While checking pens this evening, I heard something very familiar this time of year — the unmistakable clucking of a breeding male Redfoot tortoise. 🌿

Normally, that wouldn’t be unusual around here this time of year… but this time, the sound was coming from a very old male we’ve had for about 6 years.

In all that time, he’d never shown the slightest interest in the females. We honestly figured he was “retired.” 😅

Apparently… he had other plans.

Nature always finds new ways to surprise you when you work with these incredible animals long enough. ❤️🐢

🥚🐢 More tiny shells are on the way!

One of our female eastern Hermann’s tortoises just finished covering her nest, and inside was a beautiful clutch of eggs now safely tucked away in the incubator. ☀️

With nesting season in full swing, we’re excited to welcome another group of captive bred baby Hermann’s tortoises in the months ahead. 💚
