REMINDERS RELATED TO SCHOOL FROM OAK GROVE POLICE DEPARTMENT
SCHOOL ZONE - School starts back this week with students returning on Thursday. Oak Grove Police Department would like to remind citizens of the School Zone. School zone hours are from 7:05 AM to 8:05 AM and 2:55 PM to 3:55 PM.
CELLPHONES - ALL COMMUNICATION DEVICE USES ARE PROHIBITED while inside the school zone, which includes hands-free devices. Student safety is of the utmost importance; therefore, officers will be monitoring the school zone daily. Cellphone use in a school zone is punishable by up to a $500 fine for the first offense and up to $1000 and suspension of driving privileges for second and subsequent offenses.
SPEED – We ask the citizens to be mindful of students in the area and lower their speed. The speed limit in the school zone is 25 MPH. Some students walk to and from school, and their safety is of the utmost importance. Speeding fines within the school zone are doubled.
SCHOOL BUSES – Officers will continue to briefly close S. Constitution Ave. (HWY 17) at the intersection of Willis St. in the afternoon to assist the buses in exiting Willis St. This closure lasts approximately 2 minutes around 3:10 PM.
HIGH SCHOOL DROP-OFF / PICK-UP – The school has advised that the same routes as last year will remain in effect. Parents, please delay your arrival in the turn lane on West Main St. until after all buses have departed the bus ramp, which is at 3:10 PM. Early arrival causes the turn lane to back up to Constitution Ave., causing traffic jams that obstruct the roadway. Early arrivals will be asked to leave.
ELEMENTARY DROP OFF / PICK-UP – Again, same routes as last year; however, vehicles should not sit stationary in the eastbound lane on Willis St. waiting to turn into the school parking lot. Blocking both lanes of traffic prevents emergency vehicles from passing safely through the area in need of an emergency. Vehicles found to be parked in the eastbound lane will be asked to leave and join the westbound lane.
WALKERS – Parents, please have your students use the designated crosswalk at the traffic light located at the intersection of Main St. and Chatman St. The crosswalk is there for the students to cross the highway safely. There is NOT a crosswalk at Tiger Dr., and students will be stopped and sent to the crosswalk at the traffic light. We do not want a student struck by a distracted driver.
