BRADFORD/DESHAWN: Black male. Early to late 20’s with a beautiful body. As Bradford, he is articulate and upper-middle class. As DeShawn, he pretends to be thuggish and mumbling. Bradford is struggling with being a part of the upper middle class while trying to learn about his culture.

PINK: Transgender woman or Male: Outgoing, flashy, attention-loving, “finger-snapping” African-American drag queen (the term used in 1989) in her early-late 20s. She is a “diva.” She is self-confident, though naïve. She loves being beautiful.

I Wear the Mask is the challenge faced by Bradford/DeShawn depending on who is wearing the mask. Bradford struggles to hide the pain and suffering of being Black in the late 90’s and hides his true feelings behind a façade of joy and contentment to navigate racial justice in and out of his community.

• Rehearsals: Start online December 22nd and in-person starts January 12th @ 6pm and are every Monday and Thursday

Seeking-—

Zuri- Black- Light Skin. Male (20-40). Multiple roles. Carries the essence of Black resilience, culture, and struggle across different historical eras. Each role reflects a unique facet of the Black experience—a young rebel of the ‘90s, an activist of the ‘60s, and right hand man of a club owner in the 1920’s who is looking for his time to shine. He has loyalty, but he also has ambition.

Shades delves into the impact of colorism across generations, examining how it has shaped the lives of characters Adana and Hanifa from 1619 to 2025. By intertwining their experiences, the story highlights how colorism affects individuals differently based on skin tone, and how these effects ripple through generations. Colorism has divided a culture of women that are stronger together than on their own. We address the issue of not just being black but being dark-skinned & light skinned females in American society.
