Friday Severe Weather Update – Slight Risk Issued

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded parts of the region to a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms today into tonight, stretching from southeast Texas into the central Gulf States.

What’s happening:
A strengthening storm system will move east today as a weak surface low develops across Texas into Louisiana and Mississippi. Storms will initially develop over south-central and southeast Texas before spreading eastward into the Lower Mississippi Valley and central Gulf states this evening and overnight.

Storm evolution:
• Late morning–afternoon: Storms developing in Texas may be elevated at first, with hail and strong winds the main threats
• Evening–overnight: As storms move east, increasing low-level wind shear will raise the potential for organized storms, including supercells

Main threats:
• Damaging wind gusts
• Large hail
• Tornadoes, especially later today and tonight as wind shear increases

Storm coverage may be widespread along the warm front, which could limit how far north the strongest instability reaches. Because of this, the overall threat remains focused but conditional, and not everyone in the Slight Risk will see severe weather.

Bottom line:
This is a more active severe weather day compared to earlier outlooks, particularly from southeast Texas into Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Stay weather-aware today, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially this evening and overnight.

A multi-day storm system will move across the Southern Plains into the Mississippi Valley from Wednesday evening through Friday, bringing periods of thunderstorms along its path.

🔹 Wednesday Night into Early Thursday:
Storms are expected to develop from west-central and eastern Texas into Oklahoma as an upper-level disturbance moves through. While instability will be limited, strong wind shear may allow a few storms to organize. Isolated strong to marginally severe storms are possible, mainly producing gusty winds and small hail.

🔹 Thursday:
The system shifts east into eastern Texas, Oklahoma, the Ozarks, and the Lower/Mid Mississippi Valley. Storms may remain elevated, which should keep the severe threat on the lower end. However, isolated strong to locally severe storms will remain possible, with gusty winds and marginal hail the primary concerns.

🔹 Friday:
As the system continues east, a larger warm sector is expected to develop across parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley. This may allow for scattered to more widespread thunderstorms, with a continued risk for organized storms. While the system does not appear overly strong at this time, damaging winds and hail will be possible, and a conditional, low-end tornado threat cannot be ruled out depending on how surface features evolve.

📌 Overall, this looks like a low to locally moderate severe weather setup, where small changes in timing and placement will matter. Many areas will simply see rain and thunderstorms, but a few stronger storms could occur along the system’s path.

Stay weather-aware through the end of the week and continue to monitor updates as details become clearer.

This year has been enlightening. I’ve always had a love and passion for thunderstorms, and I’ve always been interested in tornadoes. Even though I didn’t see any tornadoes this year, I’m hoping that changes in 2026
This year, I stayed right here in northwest Ohio. I didn’t have the opportunity to get out and chase beyond this area, so I made the best out of what I could.

I had the chance to chase a derecho and a few rain shafts and had a few chances to see the Northern Lights It wasn’t the most exciting year, but it reignited my love for weather and storms. I’m very motivated going into next year I want to learn as much as I can before storm season picks back up this spring. I want to get better at forecasting, and I’d really like to improve my broadcasting and bring you all better coverage out in the field.

This has been about as good of a year as I could have had with the time constraints I faced, but I have plans for next year and I have plans for the future. I truly feel like I’m just getting started, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Happy New Year! Thank You everyone for your support! It means the world to me !

🚨 Heads Up – Weather Impacts Tonight 🚨

Eastern Michigan, Southern Michigan, Northern Indiana, and most of north and central Ohio

Light snow, slick roads, and brief whiteouts are possible through late this evening as snow and blowing snow continue across the region. Some spots could quickly become snow-covered,
especially bridges, ramps, and untreated roads.

It’s New Year’s if you’re out traveling, please be safe and use caution. Conditions may change suddenly in bursts of heavier snow
Stay warm and have a Happy New Year. 🎉❄️

Serious question do people actually like this kind of weather over 70–80° weather? 😅 I mean, I’m a bit of a bigger guy and I usually don’t like being hot, but man… these blasts of Arctic air are making me reconsider living in the northern states. 😂

I know nobody likes the wind, but seriously this weather sucks!

The state of New York now has 66,991 residents without power due to strong winds and lake-effect snow. The ice storm appears to have shifted farther northeast I’m not seeing much coverage coming out of that region right now
If you’re in the Northeast and have pictures or updates, I’d love to see them feel free to share!
