📱 PHONE DOWN. PEOPLE FIRST. 🫖

We’ve all seen it.

Dinner is served. Everyone sits down…and someone’s scrolling, texting, checking notifications—or taking just one more picture of the food. 😂

But here’s the etiquette question:

When you’re sharing a meal with someone, where should your phone be?

Ideally, not competing for your attention.

Unless you’re expecting an urgent call or need your phone for a legitimate reason, putting it away sends a simple message to the people sitting across from you:

“Right now, you have my attention.”

And if you do need to check it? A quick, “Excuse me, I need to respond to this,” goes a long way.

Because sometimes good etiquette isn’t about knowing which fork to use.

It’s about making the person across the table feel more important than the person on the other side of your screen. ❤️

Forgot their name five seconds after they told you? 😬 You’re not alone!

It’s actually more gracious to simply ask again than spend the entire conversation avoiding their name.

Try:

“I’m sorry, would you remind me of your name?”

No elaborate excuse needed. A little honesty beats an awkward game of How long can I talk to you without saying your name? 😂

You got the invitation. You showed up hungry. But before you grab that plate… 😏

A few little reminders from Sweet Tea & Civility:

🌭 Don’t arrive starving and two hours early. Your host is probably still getting dressed!

🥤 If you bring something to share, don’t assume you’re taking the leftovers home. Once it hits the buffet, it belongs to the party. 😂

🍽️ Don’t critique the cook’s cooking. If Aunt Linda likes her potato salad with raisins, today is not the day for an intervention. 😩

📱 Ask before posting people—or their children—on social media.

🧹 Before you leave, offer to help. You don’t have to reorganize the kitchen. Gathering your trash and asking, “Can I help with anything?” goes a long way.

And perhaps the biggest one:

Don’t overstay your welcome.
When the host starts putting food away, stacking chairs and turning off lights… beloved, the cookout has concluded. 😂😂

Did we get you with the word “always”? 👀

Proper etiquette does not require you to bring a host or hostess gift every time you’re invited to someone’s home for dinner.

That said, bringing a small token of appreciation is a gracious gesture, especially when someone has gone to the trouble of hosting you. Flowers, chocolates, a candle, or another thoughtful item can be lovely—but the point is appreciation, not obligation.

And remember: a good host should never make a guest feel uncomfortable for arriving empty-handed. Graciousness goes both ways. 🫖
