How Many Demos is "Enuf?"

First of all, let me make clear the obvious, that the illustration is a throwback just for fun, and I don't actually store my VO demos this way! :-) These days, demos are digital files. Onward...

Every VO artist starts with one demo. It may be a catch-all of the styles they do best at the moment, or it may represent just a single genre of VO that is currently their strongest one, such as game characters, image voice, or hard sell. But as your repertoire increases, so can the number of demos you keep on hand.

Personally, I like having LOTS of demos!

I have several general demos of varying lengths, including a longer one for situations where the client seems to want to hear the full gamut of things I can do. I have a cluster of demos for various styles and genres, including things like phone messaging, characters, etc. In addition, I keep on hand individual clips of very very specific, single voice styles that drill down to just one voice...so I'm ready if the client asks if I can do Rod Serling, a fantasy "Lord of the Rings" style narration, a children's storybook narration, a cowboy, etc.

In all, I have over 30 different demos and sample clips I can send clients, and find myself dipping into the collection for more than the top two or three with some regularity. It's great fun to be able to say, "sure, I have an example of that," and fire it off to them.

So yeah, as you expand what you find you're able to do, don't be afraid to packrat away any VOs you think showcase something interesting in your voice or illustrate the depth of your repertoire. Store them as individual clips so they can be shared separately, or combined in a style demo or general demo. To my way of thinking, the more, the merrier!

Maybe you're new to voice-over work and need a demo, or have some experience but creating demos isn't a strong point for you? Let me help! PM me and I'll be happy to assist in identifying your strengths, selecting scripts (or clips from what you've already done), compiling, and producing a demo that'll help win you work!

One last thought. A great starting point if you're just getting into creating demos is this dirt-cheap but extremely helpful course, which I'm making available at a discount on Fiverr: It covers a LOT of ground, and can tell you all the steps to creating a demo that will get you some sales.

Voiceover Coaching

In the "Final Analysis"
(A Tip From "The Coach")

One of the most common problems I hear in voice-overs, especially among people who are fairly new at it, is in the way they end their sentences. Rather than ending them in a natural way, they wrap up every sentence with the same sort of drop in pitch. If you listen to people converse normally, that's not how we talk. We don't go down exactly the same way at the end of every sentence. Sometimes we hold steady, sometimes we lift a little. If it's a question, we lift a lot.

People who report the news at smaller radio stations are notorious for this. Some of them conclude every phrase with a very deliberate, "reporterish" plunge in pitch, rather than reserving that big drop for the last sentence in the news story where it makes sense, because it signals they're moving on to the next story.

Here's the key. Regardless of what you're reading, don't "read" it. As soon as you change from natural, conversational use of inflection, you'll not only come across as stilted, but your sentences will all start ending the same way. Practice reading as though you're telling the copy to someone, and be aware of how your sentences end. Make sure you vary your approach, and you'll instantly be a better presenter, whether live or recorded.

If this tip is useful, and think others might benefit from it, please feel free to share it on your favorite Facebook groups and pages.

Live from Oconto...hope you guys enjoy it.
Slow it Down, Read it Through, Mark it Up Want to improve what you deliver to your clients? Here are three suggestions: 1. Slow it down. When we initially get an order, we can feel a little breathless and excited to tear into it. This can result in our doing to a "rip-and-read" voice-over that doesn't serve our customer well. So let's tap the brakes, relax a little, take a deep breath, exhale, slow down, then move to step two... 2. Read it through. Ego can be our enemy as voice-over people. We can think so highly of our natural abilities that we assume we can cut the copy without pre-reading it, and still put in the necessary emphasis, meaning, emotion, etc. To a degree, that can be true...though it's also true that if we know the points the copy is making in advance of voicing them, understand the nature of the product or service, and grasp the overall theme of the message, we'll have much better continuity in our delivery. We can use our voice to anticipate what's coming next in the copy if we understand the thought process it follows. We can logically lead the listener through the message in a way that makes the conclusion or call-to-action much more meaningful. 3. Mark it up. As you pre-read the copy, note the pitfalls, places where pausing and emphasis are important, and where a phrase will only make sense if it is read as a single thought. Use markup to indicate areas that need stressing, pauses for effect or clarity, etc. The fact that scripts are digital these days makes markup quick and easy. Here are some techniques I find useful: Boldface: Emphasis! Italics: Mark a phrase that is meant to run together and all be part of the same thought. Three dots (...) Insert pausing I've attached a screen grab (obscuring the brand name) for a recent project to show some examples of markup. On longer scripts and audiobooks, it becomes darned-near impossible to pre-read and mark everything up. But for shorter scripts, it can make a big difference in the quality of what you deliver: leading to more repeat business, and a greater sense of satisfaction in what you have accomplished for your client. -- How can I help you in your voice-over career? Contact me if you would like to arrange coaching, or assistance in creating a gig-winning demo! 920-672-8244
