How Urban Forest Nursery Achieves 90%-100% Survival Rates with Root Control Bags 🌳

Jim Barborinas, owner at Urban Forest Nursery, Inc. in Mount Vernon, Washington, recently shared these images of their 2" caliper trees being harvested!

Urban Forest Nursery commercially grows their trees in Root Control Bags for a reason: to develop a better, fuller root structures that quickly adapt when transplanted. With Root Control Bags, Jim harvests approximately 80% of the root structure with the plant, without the need for heavy equipment or a large crew.

For the last couple of days, Kurt and Edvin from High Caliper Growing, have been at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois for the Landscape Below Ground V Conference.

This international conference focused on the latest science-based management strategies for establishing and maintaining trees' roots in challenging urban situations. Top scientists and practitioners from around the world shared their knowledge to help managers and policymakers choose, plant, and care for healthier, longer-lived trees by focusing on trees' critical and vulnerable root systems.

High Caliper Growing was proud to be in attendance and support our lifetime friend, James Barborinas with Urban Forest Nursery, Inc. James spoke yesterday on Fabric Grow Bags for Improved Root Development; Specifically High Caliper Root Control Bags.

Kuenzi Turf & Nursery Grows Bigger Trees That Flourish in a Changing Climate

Kuenzi Turf & Nursery in Salem, Oregon has been growing trees for over 20 years. They are a longtime customer of High Caliper Growing, Inc., and they use High Caliper 21" specialty grade in-ground Root Control Bags to help them grow bigger trees that will flourish in a changing climate.

In the article "The Tribulations of Big Trees" by John Bell, published in Digger magazine, Kuenzi Turf & Nursery is featured for their ability to grow trees that are two years faster than bare root grown plants. Casey Trees and the Washington Wizards Team Up to Plant Trees

Last month, Casey Trees and the Washington Wizards partnered to promote environmental awareness through their amazing Green Night Game. A portion of ticket sales went to assist with tree planting efforts in the DMV. The day was filled with excitement and love for the District’s favorite trees as volunteers came together from the Washington Wizards, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, and Royal Courts Apartments & Savannah Heights Apartments to plant 25 young Root Control Bag grown Cherry trees in the complex. Trees that will provide beauty and shade to the residents of Royal Courts for decades to come.

The Root Control Bag made the planting portion a breeze by allowing Casey Trees to grow large trees with a manageable root ball size. For the past few years Dr. Yeager, working with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Department of Environmental Horticulture, has studied the real-world effects of using High Caliper fabric containers vs convention plastic containers.

Last week the High Caliper Growing, Inc. Crew had the opportunity to attend The 2023 Gulf States Horticultural Expo in Mobile, Alabama. We used this opportunity to build and maintain our professional network and get updates on industry issues/trends throughout the Green Industry. With over 2,800+ attendees and 350+ professional companies showcasing, GSHE 2023 was another great success!

One booth that caught our eye was that of long-time customer from Mississippi, Natchez Tree Company. Their booth showcased two Root Control Bag grown trees, which accurately displayed the benefits of growing in our bags. As the tree's roots grow, they entangle with the inside surface of the fabric; Many small roots pe*****te. The tough fabric, however, girdles the roots at all points of intersection. The roots quickly lose their apical dominance, and lateral root branching or pruning occurs inside the bag; A fuller root structure quickly develops with the Root Control Bag.
