okc.net It's an online magazine about the future. Although sometimes you have to talk about the past and present when looking forward. Fact. okc.net is a quirky online arts, travel, and leisure magazine owned and operated by the creator of the unaccountably successful "365 things to do in Oklahoma City" page, one of the first, and easily the strangest, of the many "365 things..."

Into The Blue Again

Around this time last year, I had a dark premonition: Trump might actually win. I was half listening to NPR (because of course, I am that guy) and I heard a Clinton surrogate say that they were not worried about Trump’s appeals to racism. Hate and fear don’t win elections, they said, policies do. I…

Guest Star: Sadie Hawkins

Sadie Hawkins is Atlanta's gravity-defying fireball. A burlesque aerialist and fire performance artist, her acts are charged with a sensuality and a sense of humor whether she's in the air, on stage or afire. Since her debut in 2004, Sadie has been entertaining audiences both solo and with troupes counted among the best of Atlanta. Currently an independent performer, Sadie travels extensively as a featured performer at corporate events, festivals and local productions, and she was headliner of the inaugural Virginia Burlesque & Sideshow Festival in 2013.

Sadie Hawkins has been working with Hot Toddies Cabaret since 2009, and as well as collaborating with Flight of Swallows, an improv music and aerial performance group she co-founded with cellist Deisha Oliver in 2010. Previously, Sadie co-founded Blast-Off Burlesque, performing and producing with the group from 2006-2012. Known for quirky, performance art-style acts, Blast-Off Burlesque was voted Best Burlesque Troupe in Creative Loafing’s annual Best of Atlanta survey 2009 through 2012 and in 2010, Atlanta Magazine named the group Atlanta’s Best Burlesque troupe. Sadie Hawkins began her relationship with burlesque as part of Doll Squad Burlesque Revue in 2004.

Sadie is best known for performing and teaching lyra (aerial hoop). In addition to lyra, she regularly works with fire and a variety of aerial apparatus including aerial net, silk sling, aerial rope, still rings, trapeze, chains, and a variety of improvised apparatus.

Why I Stay

Counterpoint:

http://okc.net/2015/02/07/stay/

By Colin Newman Earlier today, Helen Grant wrote an excellent essay/rant about why she's leaving Oklahoma for greener pastures. Reading it made me think about what is keeping me here. First off, I don't begrudge anyone for leaving. I get it. I'm from New Mexico originally, and whenever I'm there I g…

Oklahoma Music and Arts: Why Should We Care, Honestly?

It won't be popular with some, but it had to be said. #oklahoma #culture #art #politics #guacamole #women #hispanic

Helen Grant I want to start off by saying I haven't been real impressed with the state of arts coverage in Oklahoma. The same sorts of complex issues get glossed over again and again in favor of more outlandish things breaking into the conversation. It seems anymore when I read an article about musi…

Justin Townes Earle, Robert Ellis, Lindi Ortega, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers and Jonny Fritz are the latest additions to Guthrie’s Queen of the Prairie Festival, an inaugural alt-country and Americana concert slated for May 1-2 at Cottonwood Flats. If you are one of tens of thousands familiar with…

The gloves that will "change the way we make music", with Imogen Heap

This makes me think of three slightly unrelated things: David Bowie's "Fashion," Bill and Ted playing the music of the future, and, speaking of imaginary things, also air guitar.

Do I like them? Yes I do. And I like Pageantry, who opens, a lot as well. Promises to be a great night of music. Bonus there is a sneak peak of what the live visuals will look like as well. Pretty sweet for a free show.

Horse Thief's 2014 album "Fear in Bliss" is a favorite of mine. I realize a lot of people tend to make hyperbolic statements when describing their "favorite" anythings. So, to clarify, I bought "Fear in Bliss" on blue vinyl, attended their release show in OKC, and added the album's closer "Warm Reg…

Bonus: Amplifan is giving away a little something, something that evening too.

P.S. in 2014 deadCENTER Film Festival also brought back a piece of Memphis for OKC with the screening of "Take Me To the River." A story of race, music, and the collaboration between generations. There was a great turnout for the screening that year followed by a concert with musicians in the film at Myriad Botanical Gardens.

by Helen Grant Memphis has an allure that is shrouded in food, music, and history. True it’s where Dr. King was assassinated, but it is also my birth city. Last year for my 32nd birthday, I took a trip to visit and better get to know the place I might have grown up in had…

Looks like this one is breaking box office numbers this weekend.

People have different theories on acting and different ideas about what great acting is. Perhaps at its simplest acting is when a personality we are brainwashed to regard as a celebrity slips into someone we’ve actually known before, but don’t know yet. Such was the startling way I felt when Bradley…

Some of the artists on this list have been interviewed or featured in some way with us before too. Some of them will be playing OKC next year as well.

Helen Grant I kept this playlist to 30 songs. Each represents an artist or group that released a new single, EP, or LP this year that I really liked or loved enough to buy, see in concert, and/or pursue an interview. Would you call this list "alternative"? Considering I'm in Oklahoma and really…
