Oklahoma City is among a recent wave of cities that have installed streetcars to give their downtowns an economic boost. But unlike many others, the city installed its streetcars without federal help.

Aaron Lee Tasjan Calls for Change, Compassion on New Song 'If Not Now When'

8 reasons why missing Aaron Lee Tasjan at The Jones Assembly is a very bad idea // Sometimes the best musicians are known best by musicians. Aaron Lee Tasjan is such a talent.

We asked long-time OKC music writer Nathan Poppe to enlighten us for the Tue 8/7 show at The Jones.

Poppe’s Reason No. 1 // I think people chew on food and new music in a similar way. A fancy menu almost jumps at the opportunity to let you know where its steak used to live.

Whenever I share fresh tunes, people always ask where the artist is from. That’s funny to me. Sure, it might help the newly initiated listener feel more comfortable but isn’t this a better question: Where is this artist going? Look at someone like singer/songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan. You can say he’s based out of East Nashville, but he’s belonged to the road for the past few years.

Under this solo namesake, Tasjan has been fusing together rock ’n’ roll and country-leaning, clever phrasing like a mad chef. He’s a little Tom Petty, a touch of Harry Nilsson but a lot himself. He’s opened for Lucinda Williams and shared his music around the world. It’d be borderline foolish to miss his return to Oklahoma City.

He’ll be cooking with a full band and serving a generous portion of new material. Where’s Tasjan going? Come see for yourself.

OETA Executive Director Polly Anderson and her team compiled educational resources for kids, parents and caregivers on the OETA website.

“Change and uncertainty can be hard for children,” said Anderson. “We want parents to know we have resources to help them talk to their children about what’s going on.”

Parenting toolkits and discussion guides also can be found at PBS Parents.

“Our children are the future,” said Anderson. “As we do everyday, we will insure that students and caretakers have the resources they need.”

The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper - Thanks, Big Oil, For Teaching Oklahoma's Kids

Last fall, Comedy Central did an ironic piece on Oklahoma’s educational crisis, and the presence of oil-industry-funded, pro-fossil-fuel curriculum in OK classrooms.

The only thing that didn’t make us cringe was the dignified commentary of Mickey Dollens. We just reposted our interview w him on the site.

In Energized Detroit, Savoring an Architectural Legacy

Legacy // We created our new Shaker & Tin cocktail workshop series in collab with the skilled team at 21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City + its Mary Eddy's OKC restaurant.

We love being a tiny part of the story of this auspicious structure, a former Model T plant designed by the internationally renowned Albert Kahn. Kudos to Fred Jones descendants—the Hall brothers—who restored it in partnership w/ 21c.

The New York Times just did a feature on Kahn, easily one of the most important architects of the 20th c.

“Kahn truly influenced the Modern movement with his industrial work,” said Alan Cobb, an architect who has been the president and chief executive of Albert Kahn Associates since 2013. “[Walter] Gropius and [Ludwig] Mies van der Rohe looked to Kahn for their philosophies. Basically, while they were creating the philosophy behind modern architecture, Albert Kahn was quietly building it.”

From the Fisher Building to Belle Isle (and beyond), the works of the renowned Albert Kahn endure. Here’s how to see them.

Announcing Shaker & Tin—a new bimonthly cocktail school created by Mary Eddy's OKC and Territory:OKC!

Creating a stylish cocktail is one of life's great pleasures. The new Shaker & Tin cocktail workshop series teaches you:

+ the mad skills of craft bartending
+ how to perfect classic cocktails
+ how to evolve classics into more complex drinks...and more.

What's the difference between shaken and stirred? Does it matter which strainer you use? Why do you squeeze the orange rind that way? Can I make more than one drink from essentially the same ingredients?

These mysteries will be unlocked by the skilled team at Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge.

On Wed 4/18, we pay tribute to the Louisville roots of 21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City by kicking off the series with premium spirits straight from Kentucky bourbon country. Our co-sponsors, Woodford Reserve Rye + Old Forester 100 Proof, provide the base. From there, you will learn how to make an excellent Old-Fashioned, a Manhattan, a Vieux Carre...and beyond!

Of course, Chef Jason Campbell will be sure our bellies are full of delicious eats that complement the cocktails.

Valet parking + several drinks + heavy snacks provided. Swag bags from Whole Foods Market + others await our makers.

Door prizes include a night stay at 21c Museum Hotel.

We expect this event to sell out, so grab them while you can, y'all. We can’t wait to raise a glass w/ you!

15 Remarkable Women We Overlooked in Our Obituaries

Love that The New York Times is trying to right the wrong of overlooking so many important women in its obit section, starting today on #InternationalWomensDay. And they’re seeking nominees of women to include posthumously.

Confessed The Times, “even in the last two years, just over one in five of our subjects were female.” Among the overlooked:

“Charlotte Brontë wrote “Jane Eyre”; Emily Warren Roebling oversaw construction of the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill; Madhubala transfixed Bollywood; Ida B. Wells campaigned against lynching. Yet all of their deaths went unremarked in our pages, until now.”

15 Remarkable Women We Overlooked in Our Obituaries https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/obituaries/overlooked.html

The poet Sylvia Plath and the novelist Charlotte Brontë. Ida B. Wells, the anti-lynching activist. These extraordinary women — and so many others — did not have obituaries in The New York Times. Until now.
