🚀 Navigating the Challenges of Landing a Cybersecurity Role in 2025🚀

Cybersecurity remains one of the fastest-growing industries globally. With the surge in cyber threats and businesses prioritizing security, the demand for skilled professionals has never been higher. Yet, breaking into the field, or advancing within it, still presents significant challenges, even in 2025.

Here are some key hurdles cybersecurity professionals face today and strategies to overcome them:

1. Experience Gap: Many entry-level roles demand hands-on experience, making it tough for newcomers. Overcome this by seeking internships, applying for master cybersecurity course training, building home labs, and earning certifications.

2. Evolving Skill Requirements: Stay ahead by continuously learning, mastering foundational concepts, and keeping up with industry news.

3. High Competition: The influx of talent has intensified competition for premium roles. Stand out by networking, building a strong portfolio, and tailoring your applications.

4. Certification Choices: With numerous certifications available, choosing the right one can be daunting. Research and select certifications that align with your career goals.

5. Soft Skills: Technical expertise alone isn't enough.

6. Career Transitions: Transitioning into cybersecurity from another field can be challenging. Bridge the gap with targeted certifications, leverage transferable skills, and create a compelling narrative about your career change.

7. Underrepresentation: Women and minorities remain underrepresented in cybersecurity. Seek support from organizations like Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) and find mentors to guide you.

Women in Security Mentors made history on April 6, 2022 as Dr. Cheryl Cooper joined a panel of all-Black women to discuss strategies and practices for recruiting and retaining diverse talent, especially in this era of the “great resignation”. We are the first all-Black woman’s panel at Secure World and we would like to thank the SecureWorld event team for giving us a platform for our voices to be heard to further the conversation on diversity and inclusivity; that allowed us to provide strategies to move the needle forward.

We have to build cultures in which men see the woman, not physically see her, but see her value.
