As the child of LEGAL immigrants, my maternal grandfather, from Beruit, believe it or not, was very price-sensitive when it came to food. He would take me with him and spend HOURS in Publix in S. Florida comparison shopping. It was torture as a child, but it definitely wired me to be the same way. I watch food prices like a hawk, and I am a sorcerer in a grocery store.
So here's Kroger's answer to rising apple juice prices: cut the supply like a bag of coke. No more 100% juice available. It's now"Lite" Apple Juice(cocktail). Sounds healthy, right? Of course! So let's read the label:
It's now 25% juice, mostly water, and has sucralose and some other additives, presumably to compensate for what would otherwise taste like super-watered down apple juice, which is what it is.
BUT! They managed to keep the price the same: $1.79.
I like Martinelli's, which is a premium juice and is AWESOME. And Kroger has stopped carrying it.
I used to eat very healthily. But the grocery stores have stopped carrying the healthiest items, that I customarily bought. Nothing but the high-saturated-fat, high-sodium, high cholesterol, high-carbohydrate varieties left. It's what companies are being forced to do to protect margins. Even my favorite cereals have been taken off the market, and there's not much even left that could be called "healthy" without adding fruit and a bottle of vitamins on top.
