Jose Rijo night at Shooters Sports Grill in Hamilton.

I met José Rijo just this month, and going into it, I really didn’t know what to expect.
You meet someone who has accomplished what José has accomplished—a World Series Champion, World Series MVP, Cincinnati Reds legend—and you naturally wonder what the person behind all of those accomplishments is really going to be like.
What I found was one of the most genuine people I could ever hope to meet.
José is nice to everyone. And I mean everyone.
It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, how old you are, or whether you’re somebody important or just somebody who walked up hoping to shake his hand. He treats you like you matter.
And that's what impressed me the most.
This guy cares about people in a way that a lot of star athletes—and honestly, a lot of people in general—never seem to understand.
He doesn't just shake your hand and move on.
He looks you in the eye. He listens. He laughs with you. He takes the picture. He tells the story. He makes you feel like, for those few minutes, you're the person he came there to see.
And here's the unbelievable part:
He doesn't have to do any of it.
José Rijo has already earned his place in Cincinnati sports history. He doesn't have anything left to prove to anybody.
But after spending some time around him, I realized something.
His greatest legacy might not be what he did on a baseball field.
We all remember the fastball.
We remember 1990.
We remember the World Series.
We remember the MVP.
But the trophies and statistics only tell you what kind of baseball player José Rijo was.
Spend a little time with him and you'll find out what kind of man he is.
And I can tell you this…
I'm a much bigger José Rijo fan today than I was before I met him—and it has absolutely nothing to do with baseball.
Some people become legends because of what they accomplish.
The special ones become legends because of how they treat people when nobody is keeping score.
José, thank you for being exactly that kind of person.
Cincinnati was lucky to have #27 on the mound.
We're even luckier to have the man behind the number.
