“Welcome to the Navajo Tribal Park of Monument Valley.”
This fence was built to protect the fragile valley landscape, especially Taylor Rock just past the railing, which was constantly vandalized and walked on despite warnings. It does a great job protecting the land, and honestly, it adds a great rustic frame to the iconic Mittens.

East Mitten and friends.
The North Window is easily one of the best views in Monument Valley - so many iconic monuments in a single frame.
From left to right: The Hen, The Big Indian, Brigham’s Tomb, The King On His Throne, Castle, Bear & Rabbit, Stagecoach, East Mitten.

🍔 Monument Valley: A Food Guide by Roy!
🏆 Goulding's Lodge - the winner. Great food, fair prices, no fuss.
🌅 The View Hotel - the view can't be beat, but it's hotel-guests only, and you're paying for the view more than the food.
🌮 Linda's Fry Bread - quick, authentic Navajo snack right at John Ford Point.
🍗⛽ Goulding's Gas Station - wallet-friendly, tasty, and home to a Champs Chicken counter I can't skip.

The Mitten Shadow is coming up in 2 weeks. September 11–14, peak on the 13th. Every year around this time I dig back through my shots of it, and this one keeps rising to the top. Cloudy skies, low expectations — I'd already made peace with not seeing anything that evening. Then, for maybe sixty seconds, the clouds parted and the light landed exactly where it needed to.

Gifford Homestead in Capitol Reef National Park, right at the start of fall. The cottonwoods were just beginning to turn gold against those red cliffs - that contrast is something else in person. Capitol Reef doesn't get the attention Zion or Bryce do, and I honestly think that's a mistake - the scenery here holds its own. If you make it out, stop at the homestead for pie.

Whenever I look at this photo of Monument Valley through the wagon wheel, I always think of it as a postcard from the Wild West. The light might not have been ideal for photography that day, but I still love this shot.

The scale of Monument Valley still stops me in my tracks. Photos rarely capture just how massive these monuments really are - but I think this one finally does. Look closely and you'll spot a small home tucked into the valley floor, dwarfed by the giants towering above it. That contrast says it all.

Not a single soul at The North Window during my last trip. Just the last warm sunlight hitting the butte while the cliff beside me faded into shadow. My favorite view, all to myself.
