A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for portions of north-central and northeast Nebraska until 11 PM tonight.

⛈️ THREATS:
💨 Damaging winds up to 80 MPH
🧊 Very large hail up to 2 inches
🌪️ A tornado or two possible

Initial storms may develop as supercells capable of very large hail and an isolated tornado. Storms are then expected to organize into a bowing cluster, increasing the threat for widespread damaging winds as they move eastward across northeast Nebraska and surrounding areas this evening.

⚠️ SEVERE STORMS EXPECTED — WATCH LIKELY ⚠️

The Storm Prediction Center says a Severe Thunderstorm Watch will likely be needed this afternoon into evening for portions of north-central and northeast Nebraska into southern South Dakota. The probability of watch issuance is currently 80%.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop and strengthen as we head into the evening. Initially, storms may develop into supercells capable of producing very large hail around 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter, along with damaging wind gusts potentially reaching 75+ mph.

As storms become more organized, the threat may transition toward a more concentrated corridor of damaging winds, particularly near the Nebraska/South Dakota border into the evening.

If you live across northern or northeast Nebraska, now is a good time to make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings and secure any loose outdoor items before storms arrive.

⚠️ TORNADO RISK ADDED FOR TUESDAY

The Storm Prediction Center has added a 2% tornado risk for Tuesday across portions of north-central and northeast Nebraska, extending into southeast South Dakota and northwest Iowa Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening.

A stalled frontal boundary will be positioned across the region Tuesday as a disturbance moves through the Plains. Strong daytime heating combined with increasing wind shear could create an environment supportive of isolated supercell thunderstorms.

A brief tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly with any storm that can remain discrete near the frontal boundary. In addition, large hail and locally damaging wind gusts will also be possible.

The overall severe weather threat remains conditional, meaning there is still uncertainty regarding how many thunderstorms actually develop. However, any storm that does form could become strong to severe quickly.

This is not expected to be a widespread severe weather event based on current forecasts, but those across the risk area should stay weather-aware Tuesday and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
