Authorities in Gambella have confirmed the arrest of an individual accused of running a page that has been spreading defamatory content targeting regional officials.
The page, operating under the name , has reportedly been publishing a series of baseless allegations aimed at tarnishing the reputation of government leaders. After day of investigation, police identified the administrator of the account as Mr. Ruach Guech, a known loyalist of the former regime of Ato and Ato .
According to sources close to the investigation, the breakthrough came when an acquaintance allegedly accessed Facebook using Mr. Ruach’s phone. The login records reportedly revealed that the Duat Hagos account was directly linked to his personal credentials. This discovery provided the key evidence leading to his arrest on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials stated that the arrest is part of a broader crackdown on online disinformation campaigns that aim to destabilize the region and undermine public trust in local leadership. They emphasized that freedom of expression does not extend to coordinated defamation, incitement, or attempts to spread misinformation with political motives.
Authorities have also released photographic evidence and login data purportedly proving Mr. Ruach’s role as the page’s administrator. Investigators are now reviewing additional digital traces to determine whether other individuals were involved in the operation of the account.
Community members in Gambella have welcomed the arrest, saying it sends a strong message against the misuse of social media platforms to attack individuals and institutions without accountability. “We want a culture of responsible communication. Social media should not be a tool for character assassination,” one resident told our correspondent.
Further legal proceedings are expected in the coming days, as investigators prepare to present their findings before the regional court.
